My long overdue introduction

Good evening, dear readers. I know the time for introductions has long passed but, well, here we are. My name is John, aka Italianface, and I will be be the blogger that touches on whatever tickles my fancy. My first inclination was to come on and assure whatever readers we have so far that soccer, one of my most intense passions, will come into play as little as possible. But then I scrolled down to discover Dr. Chris wrote a few hundred words on NASCAR, the sport which involves turning left and waiting for a crash (I mean, seriously, if that's what you like why not just set up on an off ramp with a case of awful beer and hope some moron doesn't use a turn signal). So I reserve the right to ramble on about the, like, eighth most popular sport in this country. I'll try to keep it to a minimum, though, and feel free to read past my ramblings about Bolton or Sunderland. Other topics I might touch on? Politics, societal issues, how awesome coconut cookies are, a lot of t...

Nerd Girl Love?

Today in the internet is Support Star Wars and Geek Pride for Katie day. Katie, as we all know by now, is the adorable little nerd girl who was bullied for liking Star Wars and has since received a huge outpouring of support from the Star Wars internet fanbase. But the heart the situation I feel is being ignored. Katie wasn't bullied for being a 'dork' or a 'loser' by the more 'popular' kids. She was being bullied by other nerd boys . Boys who resented her breaking into their unofficial 'boys club' of Star Wars appreciation. Nerds are bullied too. Katie isn't the first girl to get this treatment. Plenty of girls have pursued different hobbies and interests when the boys made it clear they couldn't play. And the question is posed by well-meaning people, why girls aren't nerds. Nerd culture needs to finally accept women and girls as legitimate nerds. Women are making strides everyday for acceptance. More women feel comfortabl...

An Overly Detailed Look At: The New Transformers Trailer

Image
So we got the title, and then the poster, and now we have our first look at the teaser trailer for the third Transformers movie called Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Which you can watch on Apple's website or right here: Trailer opens with loud music and the date July 20, 1969. (the moon landing for those who don't know) We watch the landing through hat looks to be a combination of computer effects and bits of actual footage from back on earth. Therare told that our nation;s proudest moment contains a secret that's been hidden for forty years. Ok this is already reminding me of the teaser for the first movie. Does anyone remember that? We see lots of footage for the Mars rover looking at the dead surface of Mars and the footage ends with a shot of a Transformer silhouette attacking the rover and you were left wondering what Mars had to do with Transformers. Didn't they come from Cybertron? So the trailer caries on to show a back room where a bunch of NASA techs ...

Death of a Sport

Welcome to the first of hopefully many sports entries. Lets start this off by discussing how terrible NASCAR is. And no, I'm not one of those people that make fun of it because its a bunch of rednecks driving in circles instead of committing spousal abuse. No, I've actually been an avid fan since I was about 7 and was always made fun of because I was a Jeff Gordan fan. I would watch it every Sunday with my dad after church in our living room and I would take out my toy cars and play with them as the race continued on. I've kind of grown a bit away from the sport as I got older but I will still check in on most Sundays and at least catch the last 50ish laps. Now we come to the present day state of NASCAR, specifically its premier series known as the Sprint Cup Series. A few weeks ago, a champion was crowned by the name of Jimmy Johnson and for those unaware, this is the fifth consecutive year winning the championship. Whenever I watch a race, I usually have a group of drive...

Hello and Gingerbread TARDIS

As we slowly get the introductions out of the way, I'm Claire. I'm mostly interested in the Movie/TV aspects of nerd/geek culture. I'm a big fan of a number of franchises and consider myself a member of a number of fandoms. At the moment I'm watching alot of Star Trek: The Next Generation and getting involved in the mythology of that series. Of the series currently on air, I'm adore Doctor Who. I'm just dripping my toes into comics/graphic novels to try and keep my literacy up. Neil Gaiman's Sandman series is a good introduction to comics for anyone looking to try. As my fellow Awesome-ites know I'm also a very interested in the social and cultural politics of being girl nerd/geeks and geek/nerds of marginal status. I tend to interject feminist analysis in everything I do, especially in a culture still so dominated by traditionally male concepts and ideas. With that said. Here is the most awesome gingerbread "house" to be m...

Greetings, minions

So this is what blogging is like, huh? I've not done anything like this since the days of xanga... Anyone remember the good ol' days? Anywho, I suppose I should introduce myself. I am Waffle. Or Jason. Or Kiubez or Durgen. It really depends. My posts here will consist of ranting about Star Wars, D&D, video games, Star Wars, zombies, and occasionally Star Wars. Speaking of Star Wars, are you caught up on Clone Wars? If not, you should! These last few episodes have been... interesting. The introduction of Sy Snootles a couple weeks ago was strange. I don't know why they had her speak in basic... That was one of the bits that pissed me off. That and her relationship with Zero?? What was that? She already has a backstory, thank you very much. Last week's episode was a little better. The action was a little sparse but Ahsoka's new outfit more than made up for it. She looks like more of a respectable character and less of a skank. She's still annoying but it...

Gettin along on Thanksgiving

Image
For this Thanksgiving holiday, here's a picture of mortal enemies putting aside their differences and talking it out like civilized people. In reality, It's a picture taken in between takes on the set of the fifth Harry Potter movie. Still, it's quite a site to see these two iconic characters in such a unique position.
