Movie of the Week: Team Foxcatcher

Image
Alexa:  It’s no wonder John du Pont and the wrestling team he sponsored at his Foxcatcher Farm have been the subject of multiple documentaries, books and an Academy Award-nominated film. It’s a story that begins with athletic excellence and camaraderie and ends in inexplicable tragedy, with a successful wrestler’s life cut short by the man who championed his talents for years. The real-life events are more compelling than initially depicted in the Netflix documentary “Team Foxcatcher,” which chronicles du Pont’s interest in the sport, the launch of Team Foxcatcher, du Pont’s increasingly erratic behavior and the murder of Olympic gold medalist Dave Schultz. The film is essentially one part sports documentary and one part true crime saga, and the narrative feels a bit tentative and clunky during the former. But the filmmakers seem to settle into their element once the focus shifts to du Pont’s bizarre tendencies, the team’s growing discomfort and Schultz’s death. At that point it b

Movie of the Week: Working Girl

Image
Alexa:  Working Girl is so very 80s – That hair! That music! That Kevin Spacey cameo because he wasn’t a big A-lister yet! But it’s also utterly charming. I have a soft spot for hard-working characters that overcome obstacles to get the credit they deserve. And while Tess’s methods may be unorthodox, she undoubtedly proves her worth. She’s a prime example of a stereotype-shattering protagonist, someone people underestimate for superficial reasons but who’s more than capable and full of gumption. Melanie Griffith is a delight in this movie, and it left me wondering why she never became a bigger star. Harrison Ford is as charismatic as ever, and Sigourney Weaver is wonderfully cold as Tess’s horrible boss. The story drags at times, and the subplot with her boyfriend feels unnecessary and distracting (despite the fact that it’s Alec Baldwin). But overall, Working Girl is the perfect balance of a young heroine’s journey through corporate America and a delightful romance. Joel: I

Movie of Last Week: Comet

Image
Sorry for the delay on this posting, 2/3 of our reviewers were at Star Wars Celebration over the weekend. However, we're all back and caught up on reviews. This week's movie "Working Girl" will be posted on Friday as per usual. Alexa:  Even if you didn’t know in advance that Comet is the brainchild of Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, you’d figure it out almost immediately. The artful way he frames the shots, the music selection, even the typography of the opening credits are all familiar to fans of the show. But while Mr. Robot can sometimes teeter on the precipice of brilliant and pretentious, I found Comet more often than not veered toward the latter. Emmy Rossum and particularly Justin Long deliver admirable performances and they have great chemistry. The movie is dialogue-heavy, and while some of their exchanges are impossible to look away from, others feel draining and overwrought. In some moments it’s refreshing to see a more realistic portrayal of ongoing

Movie of the Week: Iron Giant

Image
Alexa:  Who knew Vin Diesel would carve out a niche voicing lovable aliens who can pack such a strong emotional punch while saying so little? Before he was Groot he was the Iron Giant, a gentle, gargantuan creature from outer space who befriends a lonely young boy after crash landing on Earth. Though people have been telling me this movie is amazing for ages, I never made time for a viewing until now – and it was one of the most charming, thoughtfully-crafted and impactful films I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. The relationship between Hogarth and the Iron Giant is a beautiful friendship, free of judgments and replete with compassion despite their obvious differences. The Cold War setting gives the classic “people fear what they don’t understand” storyline a fresh angle, adding a deeper layer to the community’s apprehension. The Iron Giant resonated just as strongly with me as an adult viewer as it would have if I’d seen it as a child, if not more so. It’s the kind of anima
