You're the Worst 4.7: "Not a Great Bet

Image
Chris:  I’m really not a huge fan of these stand-alone episodes, they all have an extra layer of cringe featured in it. Not a Great Bet doesn’t quite take the uncomfortably awkward cake away from the neighbor episode but it comes close with the closed mall/cat food dare scene. It’s a pretty good showcase for Gretchen’s mindset and how isolated she’s been long before her move to LA and how that’s self-centered to the point where she forgets key details of past friendships or lack thereof. The one optimistic point in all this is that maybe through this experience added to her therapy and her breakup, she seems like she had a moment where she realized her self-centered isolation and that she should move on like her childhood friends have. Alexa: I haven’t loved any of the bottle episodes “You’re the Worst” has done. Like the neighbor episode in season 2 and the Vernon/Paul episode in season 3, this is a detour from the season’s main story arcs that’s more unwanted interruption t

You're the Worst 4.6: "There's Always a Back Door"

Chris:  And just like that, Paul puts in a late bid to become the actual worst person in the show. Becca is still in the lead just based on so much we’ve seen her say and do since the beginning but, boy, did Paul make up a lot of ground in one episode. I want to hate Boone, I really do, because this show has always been about Jimmy and Gretchen’s relationship and it’s easy to see Boone as the person in the way of that. However, Boone is winning me over and that’s made easier by Jimmy’s perpetual delusional state he’s in this season. I’m leaving more in favor of Edgar and Lindsay ending up together as they become more adorable after they got together to complain about their failed friend attempts. YTW is also really good at cringe moments like Gretchen unknowingly talking about Boone’s daughter. It doesn’t take the cringe cake as that still belongs to neighbor episode in season 2 but it’s up there. Alexa: I would say Jimmy is back to being the worst for being such a jerk to Ed

You're the Worst 4.5: "Fog of War, Bro"

Chris:  I do love the decision to just go all in on this episode. The acting is way over the top to the point of hysterics (cue Edgar jumping off the balcony) and even the soundtrack is far different from the usual and it’s fitting to the horror movie aesthetic. I’ve praised this show many times for the attention to detail and adding little things to enhance the story or mood. For example, I totally missed the little detail in the scene where Jimmy is talking to the publisher lady about the Gretchen situation  while being mic’d up, if you look down, you can see Gretchen poke her head out from the staircase below to listen in on what’s going on. Why include that? Because as stated many times, Gretchen can go anywhere which is the whole reason Gretchen took this to 11. Jimmy started this episode by trying to tell Gretchen that she needed to stay downstairs or leave the house. It doesn’t matter how nice he was trying to be while explaining it, the message remained the same plus Jimm

You're the Worst 4.4: "This is Just Marketing"

Chris:   As if you needed further proof that Becca is actually the worst, you got a few more reasons to put her firmly in that spot. There’s a lot of delusion happening in this episode. Jimmy is delusional to think that anything positive will come after the interaction with Gretchen at the end of the previous episode. Also, Jimmy is delusional to think his novel is literature and not erotica, just because it means more to him doesn’t mean it’s anything more than what it is. Vernon is delusional when it comes to how close of a friend he is to Jimmy but it was sweet to stick up for him and believe in the best of Jimmy, even though everything Gretchen was saying was true. Perhaps I’m weird but I don’t care how much rent was already paid in advance, there’s no way I would willingly go back and live in the same house with a recent ex but as we’ve seen many times, Gretchen is an agent of chaos and conflict. Alexa: Except possibly Edgar, pretty much everyone on “You’re the Worst” ha

You're the Worst 4.3: "Odysseus"

Chris:  A gif of Jimmy’s “this is fine” moment is one of my favorite things to have come out of this show. And Jimmy climbing out of this hole might be more difficult to do than he imagined when he decided to take ownership for what he did but really, how obtuse could a man get? The entire episode, he’s wanting to own up to what he did but his attitude about it is almost as if he expects Gretchen to say “thank you” and then all is forgiven. However, the moment Gretchen let the book fall to the ground was probably when it finally clicked for Jimmy. This is not going to be an easy season for Jimmy nor should it be but it’s going to be an entertaining one judging only from Jimmy and Gretchen’s encounter at the end. And finally, Gretchen screaming “Hey…” was terrifying to the point where even I felt the need to apologize for something, anything. Alexa: Gretchen busting up into Jimmy’s house, shouting “HEY… DOT DOT DOT” in his face and promptly storming out was so incredibly satisf
