We need to talk about what Brandon Sanderson just did

Image
We need to talk about what Brandon Sanderson just did.  For those who don’t know, Brandon Sanderson is a fantasy author. Primarily a writer of adult fantasy novels, he has also written middle grade and YA novels, as well as dabbled in the realm of graphic novels as well. He is probably best known for completing the Wheel of Time series after the death of author Robert Jordan, writing the last three novels of the series from Jordan’s extensive notes.  The other thing Sanderson is known for is writing a lot. Like, a LOT, a lot. In a genre of fiction where fans joke about the long wait for Game of Thrones books, and the final book in the Kingkiller trilogy, Sanderson is the opposite of that, usually putting out multiple books a year, with at least one of them being several hundred pages long. He schedules out his work far in advance, and keeps his audience well informed of what he’s working on. He posts weekly YouTube videos updating how far along he is in whatever project he’s working on

Streaming Wars: Marvel Shows are being removed from Netflix at the end of the month

Image
If you’ve had the desire to check out the Netflix Marvel series recently, (We’re talking about the ones that make up The Defenders : Daredevil , Jessica Jones , Luke Cage , Iron Fist , and The Punisher ) you may have seen a notification that states these shows will be removed from the service at the end of the month. This is likely to elicit one of two responses from you.  1. You might think “Of course. They’re Marvel series, and Marvel is owned by Disney, and Disney has their own streaming service. Why would Disney let Netflix keep these shows when they could be on Disney+ making money for the mouse? Especially with a revived interest in the characters with cameos that showed up in both Spider-Man: No Way Home , and the Hawkeye  TV show.  Or you might think… 2. Wait a minute, those shows were Netflix Originals. They were supposed to be on Netflix forever, no matter what. That’s the whole point of Netflix Originals. What gives? The answer, of course, lies somewhere in the middle. And i

Gossip Girl 2021 Review (based on one episode)

It’s been nine years since the last time we’ve heard the famous “XOXO” sign off from Kristen Bell’s voice. Nine years since the high school soap opera full of lying, cheating, rumor filled friends to enemies and enemies to lovers saga has been seen. So it’s time to crank up the reboot machine and bring back Gossip Girl. What does a new Gossip Girl mean in the year 2021? How have things changed? How have they stayed the same? And does the arrival of a new generation of a show that feels as recent as Gossip Girl make anyone else feel this old?  This new version of Gossip Girl takes place in the same continuity as the first one, nine years after the ending of the last series. (Technically four years after the ending of the last series since the final scene is a five year time jump, but I get what they’re saying.) Now we have a new group of elite students going to Constance, with the main cast being made up of seven lifelong friends, with their leader being Julien, the It Girl, of the in

You're the Worst 5.13: "Pancakes"

Chris:  First of all, playing “No Children” by The Mountain Goats was the perfect ending I didn’t know the show needed. You’re the Worst ended with in a more happy, optimistic way than I think anyone predicted but I think it was done so in a way that was appropriate to how the show had felt previous to Pancakes. Edgar is the best of the worst, I’ve decided. Yes, trying to convince the groom to not go through with the wedding so close to the ceremony is a very bad thing to do but it forced Edgar and Gretchen to not only really think about what they actually wanted but to do so by directly addressing it with each other for once. In the end, Jimmy and Gretchen stay together but don’t get married and, honestly, it makes way more sense this way. The one thought I’ve had creeping in the back of my head since the moment Jimmy proposed was how out of character it felt for either of them to want to get married with all of their commitment issues. Neither of them deal well with pressure a

Chris:  I’ll admit that I was really worried about the direction of the final season from a quality standpoint but every episode since the Sunday Funday episode has been better than the previous. For being a comedy, this episode has some really great dramatic moments, the best of which is Edgar giving Jimmy some harsh truth but it’s something he feels that needs to be said that no one else is saying even though it will cost him his friendship with Jimmy which is something Jimmy had just started to appreciate finally. I love the metaphor of the broken glass and even though it was a joke in the opening, it remained a poignant symbol in the end. A mess is a mess, no matter who it belongs to and whether it be an actual mess or an emotional one, it goes nowhere if no one cleans it up. And that’s the danger of Gretchen believing that Jimmy will always clean her mess up because it runs the risk of Jimmy either not being their to or simply unwilling to clean it up anymore. This was a gr

Chris:  As if you needed more proof that this wedding is doomed, we have Gretchen in a flash forward saying that she’s single and “almost” got married however, I am taking that with a grain of salt because Gretchen is really good at lying usually for no other reason than her own enjoyment. However, the further proof of this doom that I got out of this episode was Jimmy’s reaction to Gretchen finally admitting everything that’s been going on with her lately. And it’s not only the reaction that was telling but it’s the fact that he had that reaction so she couldn’t see it and led her to believe that he’s fine with everything and they’ll work through it when clearly he’s uneasy and unsure. Also it’s good to see Killian once again, even if he’s now a Scientologist spreading the good news of Jack Reacher. And finally, Lindsey’s lesbianism lasted about half of two episodes but it does show that she’s eager for a real relationship but she’s not quite at the point where she becomes what

You're the Worst 5.10: "Magical Thinking"

Chris:  So I guess I’ll go ahead and point out that the woman with Jimmy in the opening flash forward was the florist which is indicative of how this episode turns out because Jimmy never seems to notice anything going on with Gretchen until someone else points it out. I think the heart of what Edgar was trying to explain to Jimmy is that Jimmy still thinks of himself as a guy on his own that just so happens to also be marrying someone. It all goes back to Jimmy refusing to change, he so desperately wants to be the same selfish guy but that’s not going to do any favors in his relationship with Gretchen. Clearly something hasn’t been right with Gretchen in the last few episodes but Jimmy refuses to acknowledge it , hence why he hasn’t confronted her over the pill situation. The closer we get to the wedding (and Gretchen’s growing ambivalence towards it) the more the wedding seems to be doomed. Alexa: The flash forward of Jimmy picking up the florist for what looks very much lik
