Ten Most Anticipated Movies of 2018

10. Pacific Rim Uprising

Pacific Rim is on may people’s top ten list of 2013 movies, and deservedly so. A big budget, sci-fi action, monster movie based on a completely original idea, it felt like a miracle that Pacific Rim was made at all, not to mention how good it turned out. Unfortunately despite glowing reviews, Pacific Rim woefully under performed at the Box Office losing to Grown Ups 2 in its first weekend. It’s thanks to the movies success in other markets, most notably China, that we’re getting this sequel, but after watching the box office return of the first movie, the fact that we’re getting a sequel seems like just as much of a miracle as the first movie existing at all. With Kong: Skull Island out last year and a Godzilla sequel coming out next year, monster movies are coming back in a big way and it’s good to see some good original ideas getting made alongside the nostalgia acts.
9. Paddington 2

Already released in the UK back in November, Paddington 2 is one of the first movies to be released in the United States in 2018. So, while it’s technically a 2017 movie, odds are you haven’t had a chance to see it yet, but you should be very, very excited for this one. The first Paddington movie was a fantastic children’s movie that seemed to come out of nowhere and surprise everyone with just how good it was. It seems that Paddington 2 may be even better than the first. Already getting rave reviews, Paddington 2 as of this writing currently has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and is actually the 4th highest rated movie on the website of all time.

8. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

The rights for the Spider-Man characters continue to be a confusing thing to discuss. Even with the new Spider-Man series being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony still seems to be trying to get everything out of the Spider-Man franchise that they can. There’s a new Venom movie in development as well as plenty of other Spider-Man “related” projects that don’t necessarily involve the wall crawler himself. But there’s one project coming out late this year that is worth getting excited about. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be the first time we see Miles Morales as the web slinger on the big screen. Miles Morales is who replaced Peter Parker as Spider-Man when he died in the Ultimate timeline of the comics. Interestingly, the title’s mention of the Spider-Verse suggests that this movie may be pulling from one of the many times that the multiple realities in Marvel have crossed over meaning that this one could get very crazy and very exciting, very fast. Add to the fact that this is being developed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (who made The Lego Movie) and you have a whole list of reasons to be excited.

7. Holmes and Watson

Can you believe that it’s been a decade since the last time we’ve seen a Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly buddy comedy? For a few years there it seemed like these two were gunning to be a modern day Abbott and Costello with the frequency at which they were putting out buddy comedies with each other. Then, nothing for almost ten years. Of course they’ve both been plenty busy in that time, so it’s understandable why they haven’t gotten around to co-starring in a movie in awhile but this one looks like they’re back on track. While you could easily say that we don’t exactly need another adaptation of Sherlock Holmes right now with two different tv shows portraying the character and the possibility of a third movie in the Robert Downey Jr. series still out there, but it seems safe to say that this one will likely be a wild departure from the Sherlock Holmes style that we are accustomed to.

6. Wreck it Ralph 2

After 2017 came and went without a new Disney movie, we’re getting the first of two sequels in a row for the next two years. (Which, for those keeping score at home, means that Moana was the last original Disney movie of the decade.) Next year’s Frozen 2 was inevitable after the mega smash that the first movie was, but a sequel to their earlier movie Wreck-It Ralph is a much more interesting idea. Already one of Disney’s more creative ideas in the last ten years or so, the sequel looks like it’s taking the idea of the first movie in new and interesting directions. We don’t know a whole lot about the plot of the movie but it looks like Ralph is taking on the internet. Meaning that just like we got to see the inside world of video games in the first movie, this time we’re seeing Disney’s version of what the internet looks like behind the screen. Also it’s been confirmed that at least one point of the movie will see Ralph visiting a Disney site of some kind where we’ll get to see all the Disney princesses, with many of the original voice actors reprising their roles from over the years.

5.Anna and the Apocalypse

This movie checks all the boxes a movie can check. It’s a British film. It’s a Christmas movie. It’s a zombie apocalypse horror. It’s a high school romance movie. And it’s a musical. It feels like Stefan from Saturday Night Live may have pitched this movie at one point. While it may be the least well known movie on the list, you can be sure as we go through 2018, the anticipation for this one will start to build. Already having played at a few film festivals throughout 2017, Anna and the Apocalypse has been well received by audiences already, securing a distributor and a wide release date in time for Christmas 2018.
4. Black Panther

You can only imagine what the response to this movie will be. For over ten years, Marvel has been cranking out superhero movies, sometimes as many as three a year, and though your personal taste may vary from movie to movie, they’ve all received uniformly positive reviews. Marvel has unquestionably set the standard for what we expect from a superhero movie today, and now, for the first time a marvel movie will feature a black superhero as the lead. Already Black Panther is breaking records for ticket presales, selling more tickets in 24 hours than any other Marvel movie to date. Black Panther’s role in Captain America: Civil War has already introduced the character to movie going audiences, and it looks like they are more than ready for a movie focusing on the king of Wakanda.
3. Solo - A Star Wars Story

Any Star Wars movie will be somewhere on the most anticipated list of every year. This is a franchise like no other in the history of film. A Star Wars movie has topped the box office charts of the past three years, and new owners Disney have stated that their plan is to release at least one Star Wars movie per year from now until forever. But with Solo - A Star Wars Story there is some fear mixed in with the anticipation. With less than five months to go, there’s been no trailer, no teaser, not even official images from the movie. So far a single poster has been released with nothing more than the film’s title on a star covered background. Add to the fact that there has been highly publicized drama going on behind the scenes of the movie (the original directors of the film were let go with just a few weeks of shooting left) and you can’t help but worry that something might be wrong with this movie. Still, similar concerns were voiced about the production of Rogue One and that still turned out well. And even with the worry about the movie, the mere fact that we’re getting another Star Wars movie just a few months after we got the last one is still a big enough deal to merit a spot on the list.
2. Ready Player One

Ready Player One is one of the most popular books to come along recently, especially with the geek and nerd crowd. A pop culture odyssey, the book is a love letter not only to the 1980s and nerd culture, but to the loving and obsessing over those things. The book was a huge success hitting the “New York Times” bestsellers list and getting rave reviews, so it’s obvious a movie was going to come along at some point. Any adaptation of Ready Player One would earn a spot somewhere on this list, but the reason it’s so high is that Steven Spielberg is directing the movie. In many ways, Spielberg himself is responsible for the movie nerd culture of the 1980s directing movies such as the Indiana Jones series and E.T., while producing other classics like Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. The fact that Spielberg is the one directing this movie as well feels like it was almost meant to be. Not to mention the fact that author Ernest Cline had a hand in adapting the screenplay for his book and expectations for this one are sky high.
1. Avengers Infinity War

There will never be another movie quite like this one. For ten years we’ve been watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe build. When it was first announced that four different superheroes where going to come together to make an Avengers movie that almost didn’t feel believable. There were too many moving parts, too many cooks in the kitchen trying to make it work, too many different schedules to coordinate to have any real Avengers movie happen. Then, not only did it happen, it was brilliant. And Marvel just kept going from there. For a decade we’ve gotten success after success from this company. Previously B and C level characters like Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy, have not only gotten to headline their own movies, they’re now household names, lining up alongside the likes of Batman and Superman in the cultural conscious. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has continued to build, adding more and more heroes to the roster, building up to this moment, where it all finally comes together for Infinity War. There will never be a movie quick this big again, not in our lifetimes. A movie culminating the buildup of eighteen previous movies, with a roster of over thirty major stars in the lineup, everything that Marvel has worked for, for the past decade is finally coming to a head for this movie. The Avengers felt big when it was released in 2012. This one feels massive by comparison.
