Nintendo announces the next Wii. The Wii U
Earlier today, at E3, Nintendo announced among other things, their newest home console.
Called the Wii U, Nintendo promised in their presentation that the new console would be both "wider and deeper" than any console in history. What basically this would translate to is that Nintendo is trying to keep the casual gamer that the Wii was so successful with while at the same time trying to recapture the more hardcore gamer audience that has drifted toward Xbox and Playstation in recent years. It was even said in the presentation that "Wii" should be thought of as 'We" to indicate the group experience of playing while the "U" should be thought of as 'You" and the personal experience of the console.
Anyway the biggest reveal of the day was the new controller that the console would have.
You can also see the controller in action by watching the trailer shown at E3
My first reaction is about how big that thing is. Based on seeing people holding it in the trailer, as well as the quoted 6.2 inch screen, I would mentally compare it to an ipad. Not to say that the huge controller is automatically a negative. I'll remind you that despite its unattractive appearance, the dreamcast controller was amazingly comfortable. But, I'm going to have to wait until I get my hands on an actual controller before having any clear opinion. I just remember Nintendo mocking how big the original Xbox controller was, and now they're coming out with this monster. I'll bet they hope nobody remembers that.
Perhaps the best place for all of the basic information on the upcoming Wii U would be this post on reddit where user striata lovingly compiled all of the information found above as well as several stats from the Nintendo press release and can be found here
