2015 Emmy Nominations Announced

This morning, the nominations for the 67th annual Emmy Awards were announced. The full list of nominations is below but first there are a few things worth mentioning in this years crop of nominations. First off, Tatiana Maslany was finally, finally nominated for an Emmy for her work in Orphan Black. It has been, and continues to be, one of the best performances anyone is giving on television today and should be recognized as such. She's been snubbed in the past, but glad to see she's finally getting her due. This will be the last year that past favorites like Mad Men and Parks and Recreation can be nominated for anything, so it's very possible that they will take home a good share of what they've been nominated for as a sort of "thank you" to those shows. Speaking of Mad Men, John Hamm has been nominated as an actor in a Drama Series with Mad Men and as an actor in a comedy series with Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt . For the first time in five years, Th...

Two New Superhero Shows

Image
Did you know that there are currently seven different shows on TV that are about comic book superheroes? No really. You've got Flash and Arrow on the CW, Gotham on Fox, Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter on ABC, Powers on PSN, and Daredevil on Netflix. You can also throw in Walking Dead and iZombie on AMC and CW as they're both based on comic books for a grand total of nine. Well it looks like even more are coming our way as two trailers have debut for superhero shows that are coming out this television season. First up we have Supergirl on CBS. So this looks a lot like early seasons of Smallville with that "How does a Kryptonian make it in this modern busy world?" kind of feel. I'll give it a go, I did like the arguments about how the costume should look. But if they keep using the term cousin so they never have to say Superman, that's going to drive me up the wall by episode three. Next up we have DC's Legends of Tomorrow on the CW So th...

Comedy night Done Wrong

Image
Once upon a time NBC was the powerhouse channel when it came to television comedy. For well over twenty years, the comedy lineup on NBC Thursday nights was a force to be reckoned with. From The Cosby Show , to Cheers , to Frasier , to Seinfeld , to Will and Grace to Friends , to The Office , NBC comedy lineup was more or less what created to modern version of Must See TV. In recent years though NBC has struggled with their once magical comedy night. While shows like 30 Rock , Parks and Recreation and Community have all been well received critically, earning Emmy nominations, and small but loyal, vocal followings, NBC's comedies have failed to find big audiences. In an effort to regrow that comedy block, NBC tried to bring back some big names including Sean Hayes and Michael J. Fox, only for both of their shows to last only one season each. NBC as a network has slipped from 1st place to 4th place, sometimes lower, in terms of viewers. As time has passed, show after now has f...

ABC Announces Which Shows Are Getting Renewed

Image
It must have been a good year for ABC. With the exception of just for shows (The newcomers Christela and  Forever , as well as Resurection and Revenge ) the entire slate of ABC primetime shows will be returning next year. While this includes some shows that were foregone conclusions, (Grey's Anatomy, Once Upon a Time, Scandal) there are a few nice surprises in there. American Crime, despite not getting stellar reviews was a big hit with critics and is getting another season. There is a good chance that American Crime might be up for some awards this fall which may have helped it's renewal. ABC has decided to also renew both of their Marvel TV shows Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter. While it looks like the proposed Agents of SHIELD spinoff, won't be going forward, the fact that both shows are going to get more episodes is great news. This puts Agents of SHIELD in it's third season which according to Forbes almost guarantees a fourth season renewal next year to e...

Golden Globe Nominations Announced (Television Edition)

But we can’t forget Television shows. Along with the films nominated for Golden Globes today we got a slew of TV that’s been nominated as well. Now these I’ve seen a lot more of. Mostly because TV is much more free than going out to the movies all the time, but a quick look at the nominees shows that you will need at least basic cable to watch most of these shows if not some of the premium channels (Not a single Broadcast show in the Drama nominees) We will get to more in depth reactions later today but for now here are your television nominees without personal commentary (Real Quick, I know that I just said no personal commentary, but it hurts my very soul that Community has not only not been nominated for a Comedy Series award but in fact is missing from the entire list) • DRAMA SERIES American Horror Story Boardwalk Empire Boss Game of Thrones Homeland • DRAMA – ACTOR Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad Kelsey Grammer, Boss Jeremy Irons, The Borgias Damian L...

Wonder Woman?

I am currently very confused by the most recent developments with the new David E. Kelly version of the Wonder Woman TV show. I can only hope Kelly knows exactly what he's doing. Earlier today, cementing the fact that this is actually happening, the lead actress was cast. Personally, she looks way too young to be a corporate executive. But then, such is Hollywood. However, in the mix of that news, stranger news was also announced. It seems that it won't just be Diana Price and Wonder Woman. Someone named Diana Themyscria is also around. In my quest to understand this very confusing plot point I may have found some answers which ease my concerns a bit. Initially I was concerned Kelly would turn Diana Price/Wonder Woman into an antisocial workaholic who spend all her time working or fighting evil. Workaholic women with no time for a family or meaningful male companionship is a tired trope and it's not like Ally McBeal and its hallucinogenic dancing baby did anything ...

Sci-Fi Shows I like that stream on Netflix

I was going through Nexflix's sci-fi/fantasy television show streaming today and thought I'd go and write up a list of shows I like and have seen, that other people may like. That and it's kinda fun to try to condense a whole series into a few short words. I'm sure some will disagree with the brief descriptions I've made. If it helps most of these shows are more light-hearted than deep brooding dramas (with the exceptions of Angel , bits of Buffy , bits of Farscape , and season 3 of Torchwood ). List of Netflix streaming shows worth checking out: For the time-travel fan: Doctor Who For the Captain Jack Harkness/sexy fan: Torchwood For the military vs evil aliens fan: Stargate: SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis For the escaped prisoners running from corrupt, intergalactic law, etc./puppet fan: Farscape For the supernatural girl-power and metaphor for life in the 90s fan: Buffy the Vampire Slayer For the supernatural moody vampire detective/Greek tragedy fan: Angel For the...
