You're the Worst 5.2: "The Pin in My Grenade"

Chris: This episode was a good return to form, as Joel mentions in his review, as this is the first “normal” episode featuring all four main characters together without a huge rift between them since season 3. It’s interesting that both Jimmy and Gretchen have agreed to elope because it seems as if that’s what people would expect of them. Jimmy and Gretchen like to appear as if they’re above all the normal couple stuff or it doesn’t “fit” their aloof attitude when it comes to love and relationships that they’ve tried to maintain since the first episode. However, as we’ve seen time and time again, this attitude is a thin, unconvincing layer that isn’t fooling anyone as both Jimmy and Gretchen do care and that they both do want a wedding on some level and knowing them, they’re going to suddenly be so enthusiastic about it that we’re going to end up with a chaotic mess.

Alexa: Jimmy and Gretchen are so un-traditional yet also unexpectedly traditional, so it’s no surprise that their wedding will likely be a combination of both. Of course they pretend like their big day isn’t important to them, but Gretchen has a childhood wedding journal and Jimmy fantasizes about the most elaborate wedding in such extreme detail that his talk with Edgar can’t be his first time thinking about it. So it seems we’ll get a wedding after all but with some uniquely Jimmy and Gretchen flourishes (like choosing 6/9 as their wedding date). But it can’t be all smooth sailing from here. I can’t help but wonder if Gretchen’s therapist bringing up Boone is a hint that he might re-emerge before the end of the season. And as much as I enjoyed the season premiere, it was great to spend more time with Edgar and Lindsay this episode. I think we’re heading toward a happy ending for Jimmy and Gretchen, whatever form that takes. But I’m not sure how the show will wrap things up for Edgar and Lindsay, and I hope amid all the wedding planning they still get some interesting storylines of their own.

Joel: This is the first “standard” episode of You’re the Worst that we’ve gotten since somewhere in season three. We’ve got the four mains back together, opening the show with breakfast and this episode give each character a chance to shine. Jimmy has a traditional Jimmy moment where he explains with the utmost authority exactly what a perfect wedding should be like. Edgar gets a great moment where he realizes that he’s reverse psychology worked a little too well on Jimmy and his newfound powers seem to terrify him just a little bit. Lindsay has a perfect Lindsay moment where she explains that the dumb one of the group can’t realize that they’re the dumb one in order to protect themselves, and Gretchen gets a whole “greatest hits” list of Gretchen moments from over the top shenanigans at work, to getting to yell vulgar obscenities at her therapist, to devoting way too much time to toilet time, to finally trying to play off her car wreck and guilt Jimmy about not showing up at the same time.
While this wasn’t the greatest, or most memorable episode of You’re the Worst it is nice to see everybody back where they belong. These four actors have been crafting these characters for five years now, and at this point they’re able to knock these scenes out of the park. I know that a good portion of this final season is dedicated to the wedding (a date was picked in this episode in a scene with the perfect blend of sweetness and goofiness) but I hope the show doesn’t lose these goofy side quests that give every character a chance to shine.
