You're the Worst 4.4: "This is Just Marketing"

Chris: As if you needed further proof that Becca is actually the worst, you got a few more reasons to put her firmly in that spot. There’s a lot of delusion happening in this episode. Jimmy is delusional to think that anything positive will come after the interaction with Gretchen at the end of the previous episode. Also, Jimmy is delusional to think his novel is literature and not erotica, just because it means more to him doesn’t mean it’s anything more than what it is. Vernon is delusional when it comes to how close of a friend he is to Jimmy but it was sweet to stick up for him and believe in the best of Jimmy, even though everything Gretchen was saying was true. Perhaps I’m weird but I don’t care how much rent was already paid in advance, there’s no way I would willingly go back and live in the same house with a recent ex but as we’ve seen many times, Gretchen is an agent of chaos and conflict.

Alexa: Except possibly Edgar, pretty much everyone on “You’re the Worst” has had their shot at being the worst. Just when I was beginning to think it’s Jimmy now, in comes Becca to remind me that she is literally the worst. When Vernon is the more capable parent and Lindsay is the most responsible one, you know you’ve royally screwed up. Except Becca doesn’t know this, because she’s so incredibly self-centered. That said, I am really enjoying seeing Lindsay take ownership of her life this season in a way that still feels true to her unique self. Gretchen moving back into the house is also quite the twist. At the end of the previous episode when she dropped Jimmy’s book, it was clear she’s a time bomb waiting to explode. The two of them living under the same roof now is a recipe for that time bomb to blow up in spectacular fashion. Jimmy and Gretchen have often been the worst to other people, but something tells me they might inflict their most severe damage on each other.

Joel: Pretty much every show where two of the characters are dating is a major, long running plot, there will be a point in the show where the two characters spend some time broken up. We’ve come to that point for You’re the Worst. Jimmy and Gretchen are broken up, and it looks like that might be the show’s status quo for a while. Personally, I really like Gretchen's decision to continue to live with Jimmy despite the two of them no longer dating. It’s a good way to continue to force the two characters into each other's lives while they’re broken up, and it fits Gretchen’s personality up to this point. Gretchen’s attitude that “Nobody gets to say where Gretchen can’t go, not even Gretchen” means that just because she isn’t dating Jimmy doesn’t mean that this isn’t her bedroom if she still wants it to be her bedroom.
As for the other character in the show, without Gretchen and Jimmy’s relationship being the focal point of the show, we have more time for these two characters to interact with everyone else. Gretchen, Becca and Vernon is an odd combination of characters that we’ve not gotten to see interact with each other much before. Though we know that Gretchen and Becca have both dated Jimmy, that’s not something we’ve ever gotten to see the two character explore much before. I’m interested to see the show get a chance to explore different pairings between the main and secondary characters as the show get to kind of explore itself in this new normal where there’s not necessarily a main relationship to focus on.
