You're the Worst 3.13: "No Longer Just Us"

Chris: The ending of this episode makes me angry every time and, honestly, it’s the main reason season 3 is the one I’ve rewatched the least. I’d like to think Jimmy was putting up a front at the beginning of the episode when he proclaimed that he’s free from family knowing what he had planned was simply saying it so that the proposal was a true surprise. It’s the moment Gretchen referred to the two of them as a family where we see the turn in Jimmy and he runs off. That’s the moment he suddenly realized that he was losing his ability to bail at any point, something he desperately wanted to hang onto at the beginning of the season. And it’s strange, it really did surprise me the first time I saw this episode because it really did feel like their relationship was finally completely solid for the first time and then Jimmy just ruins that. Luckily for all of you, season 4 is available on Hulu now and we can immediately jump into it and not have to wait a year like I did to find out what happens and what Jimmy leaving means for the rest of the group and the mess it creates.

Alexa: What. The. Hell. JIMMY!!! This episode brought some closure for most of the couples, but I wasn’t expecting Jimmy’s proposal and certainly wasn’t expecting him to immediately change his mind and abandon Gretchen. He’s been so back and forth about his relationship with Gretchen (and everything else in his life) the past couple of episodes that I was surprised he jumped so quickly from a pros and cons list to engagement. And while he obviously thought through the proposal thoroughly, he didn’t think through the whole marriage part. His speech to Gretchen when he proposed was actually incredibly sweet and perfectly encapsulates why their twisted relationship works so well. But as unconventional as they are in so many ways, Gretchen still ultimately wants to be a family, which Jimmy clearly can’t handle right now. Jimmy and Gretchen have been through a lot, but I’m not sure how they’re going to come back from this. In other relationship news, I’m not particularly sad to see Dorothy go. That storyline has run its course. But I am looking forward to seeing Lindsay adjust to living on her own. As naive as she is, I like that she’s actually embracing this major life change - at least for now.

Joel: For two seasons now, You’re the Worst has been able to wrap up it’s major crisis by the end of the season. In season one, it looked like Jimmy and Gretchen might break up, but they stayed together, at least for the time being. In season two, it looked like Gretchen’s depression would be the thing that would eventually drive the couple apart, but we had that great moment where Jimmy stayed, and they finished out season two once again with Jimmy and Gretchen’s relationship growing stronger. It looked like this season was going to end in the same way with Jimmy and Gretchen’s fears being pushed aside, and the couple getting married, but in the final seconds of the show, we get the cliffhanger of Jimmy simply leaving everything and driving away.
On one hand, some might say that Jimmy’s actions came out of nowhere going from proposal to running away in less than a minute. However, it felt like Jimmy made a very quick leap from a pros/cons list of Gretchen to proposing. It’s clear that Jimmy may have been ready to propose, but he wasn’t, and still isn’t, ready for marriage, and that he had separated these two actions in his mind. Jimmy’s issues have always been centered around commitment issues from panicking about what saying “I love you” means commitment wise, to trying to keep Gretchen from really being a part of the apartment when she was moving in. Every significant step in their relationship has also included Jimmy trying to make sure there was still an exit strategy available to him. It’s easy to see how he still felt like he had a way out if he wanted even with a proposal. After all, engagement still isn’t marriage. But it was Gretchen saying that the two of them were a family, that caused Jimmy’s escape route to start to go away. You could see Jimmy feeling emotionally trapped as he took what looked like his only chance to escape to close out the season. It feels like Gretchen’s issues that affected the relationship have been very obvious and out in the open throughout the series, while Jimmy’s have always been a little bit more to the side. But now that they’ve been dragged front and center, the whole thing has blown up in a big way with massive ramifications on what might happen next season.
