News Control: A New Harry Potter Movie

We live in a world when even the smallest hint of Harry Potter information is posted and re-posted all over the internet. And I get that. but sometimes something is reported that results in us having to pull the "News Control" feature out of storage. Today is one of those days.

You may have seen something about a new Harry Potter movie that Chris Columbus is interested in. No, not the new Fantastic Beasts movie that's set in the Harry Potter universe, but one staring the main three characters that takes place sometime between the Battle of Hogwarts and the epilogue scene nineteen years later. So here's the full extent of what happened.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Radio, Chris Columbus (who directed the first two Harry Potter movies) said he would like to direct another one, and that he knew exactly what story he wanted to tell. Here is the exact quote from Columbus.

“I would love to go back and do another one. Not Fantastic Beasts as much, which I think is going to be amazing, but I would love to do another movie with those three characters — Harry, Hermione, and Ron. I’m just fascinated about what happened to them after the end of the last movie, because then they cut to 18 years ahead. There’s 18 years there of great Harry Potter stories.”

The entirety of this news story has come from that one interview. There has been no talk of another Harry Potter movie featuring the three main characters by anyone else. Not from Warner Bros., not from any of the three main actors, and most importantly of all, not from J.K. Rowling. Rowling has a very firm grip on the Harry Potter franchise, and if there are any more Harry Potter stories to be told, you can bet that they're going to be coming from her.

I get that Columbus would love to take another swing at the franchise, but I'll bet there are a hundred directors working today who have great ideas as to where the Harry Potter franchise could go from here. Until Rowling is interested, we're not going to get any more Harry Potter stories.

(It should be noted however, there is a play in the works. Rowling is working on a play called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, that will tell more of Harry's story. Just not in the post Battle of Hogwarts era.)
