Summer of Netflix Day 10 - Hot Rod

Chris, Joel and Jason reviewed Hot Rod and they all like to party.

Chris' Thoughts: This is the best dumb movie you’ll ever find. Seriously, it’s random, silly and incredibly dumb in the best way imaginable. Every time I’m hanging out with friends and I find out that one of them had never seen this movie before, I demand that we watch it immediately and this is why I made sure to include this movie in the first leg of the Summer of Netflix. It’s a good movie to simply cut your brain off completely and concentrate on laughing.

Joel's Thoughts: This movie is ok. On the list of movies that are “Lets see if that SNL cast member can carry a whole movie” this one is nowhere close to the bottom. But it doesn’t quite reach what you would call a “good” movie. I can say it’s a very Andy Samberg movie, in that if you like his style of humor this movie will probably work for you. This is really unofficially the first Lonely Island movie (with Jorma Taccone co-starring and Akiva Schaffer directing) and they get to see how their brand of humor works in a feature length setting. A few things work. A few really don’t. But there are one or two bits that are just fantastic. It’s not a must see by any means but you will probably laugh at at least a few things throughout the movie.

Jason's Thoughts: Chris says great, Joel says ok, Jason says crap. I’ve seen this movie twice now and I still can’t find the appeal. The fact that it’s listed under “Sports Movies”  on Netflix baffles me. It really has NOTHING to do with sports. Or anything else for that matter. It would be like listing Napoleon Dynamite under “Courtroom Dramas”. Andy Samberg is an overacter to begin with but when he gets so much time in one story, it becomes unbearable. Now, don’t get me wrong, the Lonely Island has the potential to be super funny! But mostly when they have a guest star (like JT or Michael Boulton). This movie just isn’t worth the hour and a half of your life.
