Netflix Summer Releases

As the days get longer and outside gets warmer, we know that summer is approaching. Which means it a perfect time to start thinking about all of that Netflix you're going to watch inside in the air conditioning while you eat ice-cream.

Netflix has announced a whole slew of original programming scheduled to be released between now and August, so lets take a look at what's coming up in the next few months.

May 21st
Between: The first Netflix series to focus on a YA audience, Between is a Canadian show about a virus that kills everyone over the age of 21. So it looks like a good bit of Lord of the Flies mixed with some of that YA dystopian genre that's so popular right now. The first season will consist of six episodes and, unlike earlier Netflix shows, the series will not put out the entire season all at once, but instead put out one episode a week starting May 21st. Check out the trailer below.

May 22nd
Jen Kirkman: I'm Gonna Die Alone (And I Feel Fine): Netflix is fast becoming the place for comedians to go when they have a new special. Kirkman (who has released two albums before) will join the ranks of Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, and Chelsa Peretti as someone who has a stand up comedy special released on Netflix. Gone are the days where getting an HBO special was the big win for you as a comedian. Now getting a Netflix special is becoming the mark of having arrived.

Sense8: You can check out the trailer below, but one of the big takeaways is that this looks expensive. We already knew from the production values of earlier Netflix shows, but this goes to show that Netflix is here to play when it comes to original programming. Netflix has The Wachowskis
to create a sci-fi show that according to the writers, explores topics that sci-fi tends to ignore. The plot revolves around eight people who mysteriously become mentally and emotionally linked with one another. The first season is scheduled to have twelve episodes and you can check out the trailer below.

Orange is the New Black - Season 3: If you've seen the first two seasons of Orange is the New Black on Netflix, there's a good chance that you already have this date circled on your calender. If not, well that's the joy of Netflix now isn't it? Not only are you going to get what is sure to be a fantastic third season of this show but those first two seasons are waiting for you right now! You can watch them whenever you want.

June 26th
What Happened, Miss Simone: Netflix also is continuing to add original programming to it's documentary section. This documentary, which opened the Sundance Film Festival this year is a biographical documentary that tells the story of singer/songwriter Nina Simone. The film uses previously unheard recordings of the singer as well. Check out the trailer below.

July 10th
Chris Tucker Live: See what I mean about Netflix becoming the new place for stand up comedy? Since 1998 (almost twenty years now) Chris Tucker has only been in four movies and three of those were Rush Hour movies. (The fourth was a very minor role in Silver Linings Playbook if you're interested) Tucker more or less left behind his film career to focus on stand up comedy, so it's exciting to finally get to see an official release of said comedy.

July 17th
Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp: This might be one of the more anticipated Netflix shows coming up in the near future. Not only is it the prequel to a popular movie from almost fifteen years ago, but they even got most of the cast to return. Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Janeane Garofalo, and Bradley Cooper are all scheduled to return to the show. (The age of the actors for the prequel set earlier in the same summer is part of the joke) Check out the trailer below.

August 28th
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon II: The Green Legend: Netflix will end their summer with the very first feature film to be released first on Netflix. (There will be some IMAX screenings available the same day.) Described as a "sort of" sequel to the 2000 Best Forign Language Oscar winner, filmmakers have said to expect plenty of high wire sword fighting, just like the first movie had. (Note: at this time, some sources are calling the movie The Green Destiny, so that is possibly going to be the final title for the movie.)
