Long Forgotten League of Extrodinary Gentleman Film Getting New Life

Back in 2003 it seemed like comic book movies were in full swing. We had no idea of the overwhelming amount of movies based on comics that would be coming over the next decade. But there was one movie that came out back then that pretty much amounted to nothing more than a false start for a franchise, The League of Extrodinary Gentlemen, shortened to LXG to be just to make sure we knew how hip and modern the movie series was going to be.

Even though the movie ended on a teaser ready to kickstart a whole franchise, nothing ever came of that, and LXG became one of those "what could have been" moments in comic book movie history that we all bemoan if only the movie had properly respected the source material.

While comic book movies and superhero movies have only gotten bigger and better as a genre since then, they never seemed to get around to rebooting The League of Extraordinary Gentleman for one more try. The most recent mention of that was back in 2013 there was talk of attempting a TV based on the idea.

Well today it was annoucned that Fox was no longer looking at a television version of the property but were instead going to once again try to make a full scale film franchise out of it.

For those who think it's too soon to try and reboot the franchise after the bad taste that LXG left you with, let me remind you that nothing is  too soon in the world of movie reboots anymore, and Spider-Man proved that.

Let me also remind you of two more comic book franchises that had a false start in 2003. One was the Daredevil movie that came out that year, and now here we are with a completely new version of that character in 2015 on Netflix. Also 2003 was the year that the Ang Lee directed Hulk movie was released, a franchise that was rebooted in 2008, a mere five years after the first one didn't work out. (The same amount of time between Spider-man 3 and The Amazing Spider-man incidentally.)

So, I'm all for going for a full scale, big budget summer movie franchise version of this comic again. Frankly I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner.
