The Rager - RAW 1/31/11
With all that has been happening in the WWE universe these past few days, there’s a whole lot to cover so I’m stepping in to help with this weeks Rager column to tell you about all the fun and excitement that we had on the latest episode of Raw.
We start the evening off with a celebration of Al de Rio as he brings out a whole mariachi band to help celebrate his rumble win last night. He gives his traditional introduction and manages to get off a few insults before (no surprise) he gets interrupted.
Miz, belt in hand, comes out to tell del Rio how Edge has been insulting him behind his back. Del Rio does not believe this, so Edge who was up until this point off the hook comes out and says all the things he was just accused of saying. Way to be a jerk Edge. So with that in mind Del Rio declares that at Wrestlemania he will be competing for the…wait for it… WORLD CHAMPION!! So there’s that rivalry off to a nice start. After a small skirmish in the ring, not too big because everyone’s wearing street cloths, we head off into a commercial.
Back from commercial we get a GMail saying that there will be a rumble tonight and that the winner is going after the belt while the remaining six will be the members of the Elimination Chamber in Febuary. The usual top names are called out with the big deal name being Jerry Lawler. He seems surprised as anyone else that he’s going in the ring tonight.
We then go to a tag team mach with tag team “comic relief” vs. tag team “Hugs and Gills.” Was this for a belt at all? I had a hard time paying attention or getting invested in this match when it seems like it was in the long run just a set up for…yep and here comes Randy down the ramp to RKO the Nexus members. After a fairly though beat down about to end in a punt, CM Punk comes out to “encourage” Randy to not kick Hugs in the face. Orton thinks about it for a bit before going ahead with the kick and then running off into the crowd.
We then get plot furthering at the announcer’s table when Ted DiBiase comes out demanding Jerry’s spot in the Rumble. Cole takes the opportunity to complain about Jerry and the two of them give each other a couple of mean glances. Is there anyway this is going to result in some kind of in ring match? The though of Cole in a fight terrifies me but I think it would be worth it to promote the fight as the battle of Old King/Cole.
Then what comes next is the most interesting part of the evening to date. Some teaser where we see a house and some boots, ending in 2.21.2001. Yes it seems pretty likely that it just means the Undertaker is returning, but that was a quality tease, and anyway Its time to get excited for Undertaker’s yearly match.
Our next fight is between Daniel Bryan and the worst haircut that exists in the WWE (a true accomplishment if there ever was one) So who guessed Tyson Kidd as the one to come out of the Hart Dynasty? What ever happened to that other guy? He wasn’t even in the Rumble on Sunday. Oh and this fight also give the Bellas a chance to be on commentary (please let anyone else commentate the Old King/Cole match) just so they can go attack Gale Kim at the end. I think this is the storyline where, more than anything else, I have no idea where WWE is going with this.
Our first main event of the night is up, as the two Champions face off. I know this is supposed to be a huge deal but I can’t seem to muster any real enthusiasm for this. There is nothing riding on this match and we know going into it that Cena is going to have some sort of interruption (and if not him the del Rio) so this isn’t going to be a real match between the two of them anyway. And yes, its Cena with the interruption, which gives Edge the opportunity to Spear and pin the WWE champion.
The point of unified belts, I am to understand, means that the champion can go between brands and compete with anyone. So currently Eve has the belt. And Eve is on the Raw Roster. So there is no reason whatsoever for Lay-Cool to be there. No belts for them should mean that they need to stay on Smackdown until the next PPV. Oh and there was a fight.
Another “fight” happened when the two huge, huge, HUGE, guys on the roster went against the Usos. GM interrupts and changes the fight to a dance contest out of the blue, its strange the Usos dance good but then fight bad. Bla bla bla, it was stupid, lets get to the RUMBLE!
The following thoughts were had while watching the trailer for Triple H’s new movie:
Wow looks like they’re going the drama route.
Hey look it’s the girl from Modern Family.
Does chaperone count as a real job you can make money at?
Look how big HHH is compared to the normal sized people he is acting beside.
So I guess the drama thing wont last that long this.THIS? THIS is why no Triple H for a year???
Let me say that I firmly believe that a Rumble is the most entertaining type of match that exists in the WWE. The rarity of the match might ad to its appeal but despite the one happening just the night before I am looking forward to this one as well.
We start off with Sheamus and J. Morrison in the ring who start the match off quickly before Cena comes in at 3. Then we have Punk at 4, Truth at 5 Lawler at 6, and Orton at 7.
While there weren’t any defining moments in the match like last night (I’m looking at you Spiderman moves from Morrison) The Rumble as a whole was a constantly entertaining match. Its interesting to look at the talent in the Ring and think back as to who was had a rivalry with who. Cena with all the heels in the ring (and Orton) and he’s just starting up a newone with Miz. Punk seems to be moving on from Cena to Orton. The match provides a good moment to have these characters all fight one another. It give us a look back as well as a glimpse of whats to come as we head for Wrestlemania.
The Show ends with Cena Sheamus and Lawler in the ring. Cena is knocked out when an off balance Lawler is pushed into him but when Sheamus tries again he gets knocked out of the ring leaving Jerry “the King” Lawler as the last man standing. This means we now have our Elimination Chamber lineup complete as well as the championship match for the PPV. I always dread it when they keep putting Lawler into matches with Miz but so far he seems to have pulled off every single one. Lets hope he can keep his streak of entertaining matches up now that the WWE is wanting people to pay PPV prices for it.
