Here Some of Us Go Again...

Well...those of us still in college are gearing up for a new semester. T-3 days until homework and reading and class discussions and papers and tests. We're buying books and returning books and realizing we ordered two copies of one and no copies of another. Or at least that's what I'm doing. I'm breaking out the post-its and returning to life among the dorm. I'm already taping things to the side of my dresser. I'm hoping for an Awesome semester. I'm hoping for a few rest-of-my-life epiphanies. I'm hoping that Michele Foucault becomes easier to understand as I read my first homework of the semester.

Most of what I'm studying had little to do with nerdy pursuits but that won't stop me. I've got a few ideas in the work.

The next four months are going to be interesting. Who knows what awesome, irrelevant, nerdy things will happen.

What with all the talk about the Oscar nominations getting announced today, one particular nomination has been overlooked. Namely the fact that even though the ENTIRE soundtrack was overlooked by the Golden Globes the Oscars at least did right by the best bunch of original songs this year and nominated Man or Muppet as on of the contenders for Best Original Song. Sure my pick would have been for Life's a Happy Song, but that's not what's important. What is important is that The Muppets got an Oscar Nomination! YAAAAAAAAAY

Day 5 of Halloween - The Fly (1958)

Jason:  First of all, I hope that everyone watched the right iteration of this film. The one with Vincent Price, not Jeff Goldblum.  Now that we’ve gotten that straight… This movie is considered to be a Halloween cult classic. It doesn’t have a whole lot in the way of scares or terror but it still remains a seasonal favorite. For the time, the make-up effects were decent. The way Andre’s fly head twitches and vibrates makes it look pretty convincing for a 1950’s puppet mask. The story, however, is what is so captivating. I have been reading a lot of Lovecraft stories lately and I couldn’t help but draw a comparison between them and this movie. The plot is very Lovecraftian. Let me explain: The main character is a highly intellectual recluse who spends most of his time in research. He stumbles across some natural secret that ultimately leads to his destruction. You're the Worst 5.13: "Pancakes"

Chris:  First of all, playing “No Children” by The Mountain Goats was the perfect ending I didn’t know the show needed. You’re the Worst ended with in a more happy, optimistic way than I think anyone predicted but I think it was done so in a way that was appropriate to how the show had felt previous to Pancakes. Edgar is the best of the worst, I’ve decided. Yes, trying to convince the groom to not go through with the wedding so close to the ceremony is a very bad thing to do but it forced Edgar and Gretchen to not only really think about what they actually wanted but to do so by directly addressing it with each other for once. In the end, Jimmy and Gretchen stay together but don’t get married and, honestly, it makes way more sense this way. The one thought I’ve had creeping in the back of my head since the moment Jimmy proposed was how out of character it felt for either of them to want to get married with all of their commitment issues.
