Irrelevant But Awesome

So here it comes. We all knew it was coming. The official IBA review of Evil Dead. SPOILERS AHEAD! You have been warned. Now, there is nothing like the Evil Dead. And THAT was nothing like the Evil Dead. I first heard that this movie was being made back last fall and I was immediately on board. I didn't know anything about it besides the fact that Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell were going to be consultants/producers for it. I had heard several different things about it being a Army of Darkness sequel or as a reboot of the series or as a straight up remake of Evil Dead 2. But regardless, I was excited. I mean, everything else that has come out of this franchise has been absolute gold. Both ED movies, AoD, and especially the musical! Gold. Every one of them. So how could they screw this up? I don't know how they pulled it off, but they did. If this movie were titled something different and had no connections to Evil Dead, it would have been a passable horror film. Instead, ...

Welcome, friends, to Irrelevant But Awesome's coverage of the 85th Academy Awards. As you all can tell by the tag, I am Dr. Chris and I will be your wonderful host (my condolences to those that were expecting me to have a bunch of funny voices like Seth MacFarlane, I also don't do Jazz). This is probably going to be quite a long post just simply with predictions so I'm planning on just talking about the major awards and speaking only, for the most part, to the movies I've actually seen. Best Picture: Amour - One of the films I haven't seen but mostly due to my own ignorance and only watching what interested me. Obviously this will probably win Best Foreign Film because it's the only foreign language movie in this category. From what I understand it's about an elderly couple coping with declining health, specifically that of the wife, who suffers a stroke. Doesn't sound like a bad movie but it doesn't sound too uplifting either...or like it...

Here we go again with the zombies. I know, I know. It's just what I do. Here be SPOILERS if you care about such things. Went and saw Warm Bodies  this afternoon. It was really quite good! I saw the trailer about a month and a half ago and thought it looked weird. I did some research and found it was based on a book. So I found the book and read it cover to cover. It was a really strange book. The pacing was a little slow at times. The narrative was simple for the most part but had some complicated subplots that never really got resolved. Here's the gist: The zombie apocalypse is long over and the humans are trying to regain their feet while holed up in an old sports complex/stadium. The zombies have hives everywhere that are all but run by what they call "bonies". The bonies are what zombies turn into after a long time of being a zombie and it is implied that the whole zombie plague was of alien origin. The bonies are hyper-intelligent and form a sort of twisted ...

As we all know, I am Greensboro's self-proclaimed King of the Undead. In addition to having a zombie related tshirt for literally every day of the week, I run an annual zombie walk called the Belligerent Risen Against the Inhuman Nullification of Zombies (or BRAINZ for short). I also collect zombie books, movies, comics, art, figures, etc etc etc. I know my stuff when it comes to the reanimated, cannibalistic corpses of your dearly beloved. And I've got a few gripes about something I have just witnessed. I just watched the trailer for the movie adaptation of Max Brooks' novel World War Z . I read this book not two months ago and loved every page of it! The way Brooks took the Romero idea of the slow, methodical, creeping zombie hoards and applied it to a global catastrophe showed depth and insight and research that just blew my mind! The news has broken to the public and it caught us all by surprise: Walt Disney Co. has bought Lucasfilm at the price of $4.4 billion. While that notion isn't all that surprising seeing the close relationship these two have enjoyed throughout the year, the news that really blindsided a lot of people was the announcement that production will begin for a Star Wars Episode 7 movie now slated for a 2015 release. As for George Lucas' involvement, it's being reported that the Star Wars godfather will serve as "Creative Consultant" on the upcoming film. George Lucas is quoted as saying "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers." So what does that mean for the franchise? Will the mouse stick his dirty little nose in and become the new evil emperor? Here are a few concerns made by fellow IBA-ers: -What does the mean for the EU? As a fairly big Indiana Jones fan, I adore the classic Raiders of the Lost Ark movie poster that we are all familiar with. It is truly a majestic thing, and ranks up there among what I would consider to be one of the best move posters of all time.  But like all movies, there were other posters, posters that for whatever reason, were not selected and thus never saw the light of day, until now.  This is just one of several posters that ended up not getting used, but nonetheless is an amazing poster. And just in case you can't tell from the art style, that is indeed an drawing from Drew Struzan who is famous for many posters from the era including Star Wars, Back to the Future, Harry Potter, and the Indiana Jones posters that you are familiar with.  Screen Crush has a whole bunch of Indy posters for you to check out on their site. 

Let's begin with a disclaimer: I am a huge Muse fan (both in weight and metaphorically) and so this review is written as an attempt to be as objective as I can. The 2nd Law is Muse's 6th album coming off the hugely successful and Grammy-winning 5th album The Resistance. Supremacy Like classic Muse, the album starts off with a theatrical epic that goes over-the-top of what most people considers over-the-top. The common theme for most of Muse's opening songs is challenging authority and if the lyrics don't convince you Supremacy does the same, Matt Bellamy's guitar duet with a trumpet will do the trick. The track builds up to a fever pitch that makes even the quietest pacifist want to break something. Madness An interesting choice as their first official single for the album, this song came off as the natural progression to what they band was trying to accomplish with "Undisclosed Desires" in the previous album.
