Irrelevant But Awesome

If you’ve had the desire to check out the Netflix Marvel series recently, (We’re talking about the ones that make up The Defenders : Daredevil , Jessica Jones , Luke Cage , Iron Fist , and The Punisher ) you may have seen a notification that states these shows will be removed from the service at the end of the month. This is likely to elicit one of two responses from you.  1. You might think “Of course. They’re Marvel series, and Marvel is owned by Disney, and Disney has their own streaming service. Why would Disney let Netflix keep these shows when they could be on Disney+ making money for the mouse? Especially with a revived interest in the characters with cameos that showed up in both Spider-Man: No Way Home , and the Hawkeye  TV show.  Or you might think… 2. Dear Disney, So you’re going to make a streaming service too? You’re going to make the Disney version of Netflix? You’re going to want me to pay somewhere between $5 and $15 a month for another streaming service to add to my monthly payments to Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Showtime, Starz, WWE, Amazon, DC Universe, and whatever other monthly subscriptions I might be paying for? (Lootbox, Playstation or Xbox Live, maybe Sling, possibly MoviePass for those still hanging on to that, and who knows what else.) Yeah, let’s face it, there’s a good chance I’m going to be getting this one as well, or at least trying it out. But Disney, may I call you Disney? Joel:  In an interview last month, Bob Iger, the CEO of the Walt Disney company made a not very shocking, but treated as shocking, statement that the Disney company was taking a look at their plans for the Star Wars franchise and would likely be slowing down on their output for Star Wars movies, and saying that a movie every year might be too much. This of course caused a giant reaction, with reports of this interview concluding that this meant every Star Wars spinoff movie was canceled, including Rian Johnson’s planned trilogy, since it’s his fault that the franchise went off the rails in the first place. Ok, so obviously this is a situation that is once again, much more complicated than that. Yes, Star Wars , has hit a bump in the road over the past several months and changes are being made behind the scenes to correct that, but obviously, Disney didn’t spend $4.5 billion on Lucasfilm to make one last trilogy and two spinoff movies before calling the whole thing quits...

One of the biggest announcements coming out of Hollywood this past month was that Disney would be ending their deal with Netflix to start their own streaming service. Now, before everyone starts to panic, this isn’t going to take place right away. Disney movies that are on Netflix (including the Marvel and Star Wars movies) will still be there when you get home. Disney movies and shows should still continue to be on Netflix through the end of next year and, depending on how certain deals were written, some even longer than that. (For example, the Marvel Defenders series will remain on Netflix) But this news about a potential new streaming service drowned out an announcement from another streaming service that happened this past month as well. March 3rd Logan : Hugh Jackman’s final performance as Wolverine is here. Encouraged by the success of Deadpool last year, 20th Century Fox is allowing this to be a rated R superhero movie, which means we might get some of the more violent bits of the Wolverine story that have been absent from the PG-13 X-Men movies up until this point. The trailers at the very least, have given the movie quite a different feel that earlier Wolverine movies. Slower and more grounded, the trailers make this movie look more like a tone poem than an action flick. Thought I’m sure there will still be plenty of action here. The movie’s going to be rated R for a reason. March 10th Kong: Skull Island : This more you think about this movie the stranger it is that it even exists. It’s a King Kong movie, but not a remake of the classic story, but one that instead focuses entirely on the time on the island.
