Movie of the Week: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Image
Alexa:  I approached this movie with a similar attitude as I did The Jungle Book a few weeks ago. I’ve never been partial to Robin Hood – not even the animated Disney version – but I was willing to give Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves the benefit of the doubt. While Jon Favreau’s adaptation of The Jungle Book gave that story a fresh twist that resonated with me, this movie is just… bad. Like, painfully bad. Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood is wooden at best, and most of the other actors are not much better. The script is about as dimensional as a piece of cardboard, devoid of any sense of fun or adventure. The runtime is at least 45 minutes too long. And don’t even get me started on that out-of-place Bryan Adams song. The one brilliant beacon of light in this mess of a movie is Alan Rickman, who outshines everyone in his path whenever he’s on screen. I get the sense he knew the movie was terrible, but he had fun with his character and made it his own. It’s the mark of a truly talente ...

In Memoriam

We are merely 14 days into 2016 and already it's been heart-wrenching.I know there are a million tribute articles out there already but I would feel amiss if we, here at IBA, didn't have our own. A few days ago, the world lost a brilliant and creative mind. There isn't much to say about David Bowie that hasn't been said already (and probably better). The first time I remember David Bowie being a thing was when I first saw The Labyrinth as a kid. The character of Jareth the Goblin King was fascinating and terrifying. He made the character into a real person and made us feel for him even though he was probably a sociopath. And the soundtrack to that movie is still one of my favorites of all time. All anyone has to do is walk up to me and say "You remind me of the babe," and I go into full Bowie mode. His music has been an inspiration to musical artists the world over and will continue to be for generations to come. He has been called avant-garde, outlandi...

Summer of Netflix Day 3 - Galaxy Quest

Image
A movie that could've easily been a laughable joke but ended up being an enjoyable sci-fi satire/spoof that would enjoy a life of cult classic status among sci-fi fans all over. Galaxy Quest boasts a main and secondary cast that might catch the casual viewer by surprise. Today, Joel, Chris and Megan all share their thoughts. Joel's Thoughts:  There’s this really old comment that people like to bring up every time that Galaxy Quest is mentioned about how it’s the best Star Trek movie ever made. I get the quote and I get why it’s funny but it’s always irked me a tiny bit. Because Galaxy Quest isn’t a Star Trek Movie, it’s a Star Trek experience movie. The movie is about people who live Galaxy Quest (Star Trek) so much that they base their entire civilization around it. Yeah you’ve got Justin Long’s character as a traditional trekkie dedicating his life to the show, but the aliens that we see in the movie are that times a thousand. Thats what this movie captures so well. Th...
