Summer of Netflix Day 51 - The Interview

Joel: Remember when this movie was a big deal for about eight days? And it was being pulled from theaters, but then it wasn’t being pulled from some theaters, but then it was coming out on VoD pretty much right away but then something else happened? All that was for this movie. This perfectly ok, nothing great, a little better than Pineapple Express, not quite as good as This is The End movie. That’s really where the movie actually lands in terms of quality. Right in the middle of that bundle of Seth Rogen and company movies that are usually pretty good if that’s your particular brand of comedy, but nothing that’s going to change the world. And that’s not a bad place to be. In some ways the whole controversy about the movie was good, because it meant that the movie ended up being available on Netflix, or to rent a whole lot sooner than it would have been otherwise, and it’s the kind of movie that’s just right for a night of Netflix.

Chris: I don’t wanna be the one that does the whole “South Korea hacked Sony because of this?” joke but that’s really the main thought I had when I watched this for the first time. But still, this movie was funnier than it had any business being. It wasn’t great nor was it really anything special beyond the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the movie but it was funnier than I was expecting with the clear MVP being Randall Park portraying Kim Jong-un. And no, it’s not a flattering portrayal of Kim Jong-un by any stretch but it wasn’t exactly terrible and, if anything, it sort of humanized the South Korean supreme leader a little bit. However that might have been a major point of contention with the South Korean government, how dare anyone portray their leader as a human. It was a decent movie, not as terrible as the trailer made it seem but it got way more attention than it should’ve (insert your conspiracy theories here) and it made North Korea even more angry with the U.S. but at this point, it’s like turning the knob from 7 to 8.

Day 5 of Halloween - The Fly (1958)

Jason:  First of all, I hope that everyone watched the right iteration of this film. The one with Vincent Price, not Jeff Goldblum.  Now that we’ve gotten that straight… This movie is considered to be a Halloween cult classic. It doesn’t have a whole lot in the way of scares or terror but it still remains a seasonal favorite. For the time, the make-up effects were decent. The way Andre’s fly head twitches and vibrates makes it look pretty convincing for a 1950’s puppet mask. The story, however, is what is so captivating. I have been reading a lot of Lovecraft stories lately and I couldn’t help but draw a comparison between them and this movie. The plot is very Lovecraftian. Let me explain: The main character is a highly intellectual recluse who spends most of his time in research. He stumbles across some natural secret that ultimately leads to his destruction. The Full Spectrum: Dear Hunter's White EP

The Dear Hunter: White EP The White EP doesn't really resonate with me, to be perfectly honest, not to say it's bad because it isn't but it just doesn't quite click with me. That piano-driven element that I praised so much in Violet makes a return and even gets kicked up a notch but beyond that, aside from the occasional moment here and there, I found White to be a bit bland and boring. However, don't let the color fool you because the lyrics cover some interesting topics such as "No God" which essentially reflects a distrust in any sort of spiritual being that gets the credit for things that people in your life contribute, a theme that carries over into a couple songs in Act IV. I will say this, however they mixed the piano in the intro of "Lost but Not All Gone" deserves an award for making liquid gold, easily the highlight of the White EP.
