IBA Recommends: Mr. Robot Pilot Episode

We're still about a month away from the official premiere of USA Network's newest Sci-Fi thriller Mr. Robot starring Rami Malek, Portia Doubleday and Christian Slater. However, USA provided a major sneak peek this week when they aired the pilot and I enjoyed the pants off this episode.

The first thing you'll notice is that it doesn't exactly feel like your typical USA show. When I tell you a show comes on the USA Network, you immediately start associating it with shows like Monk, Psych or Royal Pains, quirky tv shows that are easily digestible. However, Mr. Robot feels like it would fit comfortably in the Sunday night lineup on HBO or Showtime and that's not just because of the harsh(er) language or mild nudity but just from the overall great quality of the show. And while we're on the subject of what this episode felt like, I got halfway through the episode and just assumed that it was directed or at least produced by David Fincher because it felt so much like The Social Network (a huge compliment from me) even down to the soundtrack. But alas, it was directed by Niels Arden Oplev (director of the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) and what an amazing job that was done.

The show takes the concept of a flawed hero to a whole different level. Elliot (Rami Malek) has a distaste for society in general and serves as a digital vigilante, dishing out justice to people who believe their awful secrets are well-hidden on the internet. Elliot is recruited by a secret group of people that really want to make a ripple in handing evil corporations the justice they deserve. In the pilot they take aim at "E Corp," a company that has a hand in everyone's daily life that Elliot subconsciously refers to as "Evil Corp" which has a company logo that appears strikingly similar to Enron's logo (pretty sure that wasn't an accident).

And that's pretty much all I can tell you all about this show without giving it away but this pilot is a very strong beginning for Mr. Robot and makes me hopefully for when the show properly premieres on June 24th.

Didn't get to watch the pilot episode live? USA is currently airing the episode on their episode as well as on Youtube. And IBA being the generous people that we are, we've provided the video for the episode below. Tell us what you think!
