Golden Globes: First Reactions - TV Edition
So for those of you who feel like you haven’t seen any of the movies nominated for Golden Globes, you may be far more interested in the television side of things. And here they are.
Best Drama Series
'Mad Men,' AMC
'The Good Wife,' CBS
'Boardwalk Empire,' HBO'The Walking Dead,' AMC
'Dexter,' Showtime
The first thing to take away from this list is the fact that The Good Wife is the only show nominated that is not on a cable network. More and more it’s becoming clear that for thought provoking and quality drama your going to have to turn to cable.
Best Comedy Series
'Glee,' Fox
'30 Rock,' NBC
'The Big Bang Theory,' CBS
'Modern Family,' ABC
'The Big C,' Showtime
For the second time Nurse Jackie gets a nomination despite being not at all funny. Not that it’s a bad show, it is just very much a drama. Also where is the alarming absence of Community? The show that should be leading the pack in this category is not even in the nominations?
Best Actor, Drama
Steve Buscemi, 'Boardwalk Empire'
Michael C. Hall, 'Dexter'
Jon Hamm, 'Mad Men',
Hugh Laurie, 'House'
Bryan Cranston, 'Breaking Bad'
Again just to reiterate, if you don’t have cable then the only one of these show’s that you have seen is House. I haven’t even started Boardwalk Empire yet but with all the positive talk about the show I need to make time in the schedule to catch up before the awards.
Best Actress, Drama
Julianna Margulies, 'The Good Wife'
Piper Perabo, 'Covert Affairs'
Elisabeth Moss, 'Mad Men
Kyra Sedgwick, 'The Closer'
Katey Sagal, 'Sons of Anarchy'
I don’t know what her real chances are but to me the biggest surprise is Piper Perabo getting a nomination. USA has produced some of the biggest hits for cable in terms of viewers but their award numbers have paled in comparison to channels such as AMC. Could this be a turn around?
Best Actor, Comedy
Alec Baldwin, '30 Rock'
Steve Carell, 'TheOffice'
Thomas Jane, 'Hung'
Matthew Morrison, 'Glee'
Jim Parsons, 'The Big Bang Theory'
Again, where is Community? Of the people who were nominated, Jim Parson’s is the one who has made me laugh the most this year. If that’s what the requirements for this award are (as they should be) then he’s got it
Best Actress, Comedy
Toni Collette, 'United States of Tara'
Edie Falco, 'Nurse Jackie'
Tina Fey, '30 Rock'
Laura Linney, 'The Big C'
Lea Michele, 'Glee'
Eddie Falco won last year and in her award speech stated “I’m not funny.” I don’t know if she was actually talking about her role specifically but I would still root for her to win the Drama Actress if he had been nominated. On a side note While network television has more comedy nominations than drama, the majority of these shows are on Showtime.
Best Supporting Actor
Scott Caan, 'Hawaii Five-0'
Chris Noth, 'The Good Wife'
David Strathairn, 'Temple Grandin'
Eric Stonestreet, 'Modern Family'
Chris Colfer, 'Glee'
Chris Colfer was nominated for an Emmy this past year, but I feel far more comfortable with him winning this award because I can pretend that he’s winning it for dramatic, not comedic, acting. Yet he has been responsible for some of the best acting moments on Glee, just none of them have been very funny. His acting should be rewarded but this award suits him far better than a comedic acting Emmy.
Best Supporting Actress
Jane Lynch, 'Glee'
Julia Stiles, 'Dexter'
Kelly Macdonald, 'Boardwalk Empire'
Hope Davis, 'The Special Relationship'
Sofia Vergara, 'Modern Family'
Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch. Jane Lynch.
Best Mini-Series or Made for TV Movie
'The Pacific,' HBO
'Carlos,' Sundance
'Temple Grandin,' HBO
'You Don't Know Jack,' HBO
'The Pillars of the Earth,' Starz
The Mini-Seriessection is tricky one because like the movies far fewer people have seen many of the nominations so regardless of how good they were, it seems that most people will end up picking a favorite based on the twenty second clips shown before a winner is announced. The Pacific is a frontrunner but mostly because it’s the one that the most people have heard of.
Best Actor in a Mini-Series or Made for TV Movie
Dennis Quaid, 'The Special Relationship'
Ian McShane, 'The Pillars of the Earth'
Édgar Ramírez, 'Carlos'
Al Pacino, 'You Don't Know Jack'
Idris Elba, 'Luther'
Al Pachino took home one of the few Emmy’s one by You Don’t Know Jack so I’m putting him up as a likely contender to take this award away with him as well.
Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Made for TV Movie
Claire Danes, 'Temple Grandin'
Hayley Atwell, 'The Pillars of the Earth'
Jennifer Love Hewitt, 'The Client List'
Judi Dench, 'Return to Cranford'
Romola Gara, 'Emma'
I could be remembering this totally wrong but wasn’t The Client List a par of Lifetime Original Movies? I haven’t seen it so I cant say if it is better or worse than the average Lifetime movie or how Jennifer Love Hewitt was in it but good on them for getting one of there flicks a nomination.
