Irrelevant But Awesome

Jason:  It’s been awhile since I’ve watched this movie. It isn’t my favorite of the Romero “Of The Dead” films but it is still fun! These movies were not made purely as scary horror movies. Each of them has their own little something to say about society and politics. “Night of the Living Dead” highlighted the struggles between perceived social and racial classes in the 60’s. “Dawn of the Dead” is clearly about the degradation of a consumerist society. Finally, “Day of the Dead” came out in the mid 80’s amidst the Cold War. In the movie, the characters butt heads continually about how to face the impending threat of annihilation. Should they attack it head on, matching violence for violence? Or should they take a more civil and rational approach? In the end, it didn’t really matter because nearly everyone gets eaten by freakin zombies! But still, to think about the context of the film’s message is part of the experience. If you've been following our twitter account lately (@IBAStudios), you know that we at Irrelevant But Awesome have been hard at work putting together our first ever short film called Taker Taken! This all came from a series of small videos I had made for my fantasy football league and every year, my ideas for the videos would become more elaborate (If you would like to watch those previous videos as well as further explanation from me,  click here ). And then we get to present day where I wanted to involve as many people in my fantasy football league as possible and the idea grew into a short film. Here it is! your first look at (almost) every main character involved in the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens Suspicious by his absence is, of course, Luke Skywalker, which makes me think that J.J. Abrams is holding onto movie details until the bitter end. (Also is that a new Death Star above Finn's head?!) Also confirmed today was that the first official non-teaser trailer for the movie will air during Monday Night Football tomorrow night (10-19-2015) on the Disney-owned channel ESPN. And finally, you can start buying all of the tickets to see Force Awakens tomorrow as well starting at around 8:30pm EST (depending on your local movie theaters, I suppose). There will be a select number of theaters around the country that will be participating in a Star Wars movie marathon in the hours leading up to the new film's release. Anyway, With Summer of Netflix finishing up yesterday, frequent reviewers Alexa, Joel and Chris took this chance to reflect on some of the hits and misses of the series. Here's what they had to say as well as some superlative awards: Alexa:  I really enjoyed participating in Summer of Netflix because it was a great way to finally see some movies that I’ve been meaning to watch for a while, and an excuse to revisit some old favorites. A few highlights as we wrap up: Favorite movie: Almost Famous. I had seen this one before, and fell in love with it all over again. Almost Famous is Cameron Crowe at his best, presenting an infectious portrait of ‘70s-era rock ‘n’ roll that overflows with love for the genre and time period without feeling overly sentimental, all grounded by an extraordinary cast. Jason:  When I try to recall the scariest movie scenes I ever remember watching as a kid, this movie always comes to mind. The scene at the end when Christopher Lloyd is melting in the acid, his eyes fall out, his skin drops away, and the twisted, murderous Toon is revealed made my skin crawl. In fact, it still does. That is a truly disturbing scene! And then he gets flattened! My nightmares of these images were vivid. But that wasn’t the only take away from this film. Roger Rabbit was groundbreaking in its treatment of actors interacting with non-physical characters. Sure it had been done before by Gene Kelly, Julie Andrews, several others really, but never on such an enormous scale! And it set the stage for everything that has come out in the last 10-15 years. In today’s movies where there is a character that isn’t physically on set, there is usually a guy in a costume that will be edited out later.
