Lets Review Books: Good Omens

Image
It's usually a bad sign to start out a book review talking about a different, better book than the one the review is supposed to be about, but that's what I'm doing. Just a quick note, if you haven't read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or its sequels you need to do so at once. Good Omens reminded me a lot of the Hitchhiker's series and while I'll say that The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a better book, that really shouldn't be a knock on Good Omens . In fact, before reading Good Omens , I wouldn't have thought there was another book out there that was even really worth comparing to The Hitchhiker's Trilogy . But it turns out that there is. Good Omens is the story of an angel and demon who are both tasked with general angel and demon work here on earth from their respective sides in the great celestial chess game between heaven and hell. And part of that work, at least on the side of the demon, is to look after the newl...

Let's Review Books: The Ocean at the End of the Lane

We've gotten so used to thinking of massive tomes when hearing the phrase "Fantasy Novel," that it's almost impossible to think that's what Neil Gaiman's book The Ocean at the End of the Lane is. But rest assured this is in fact, a fantasy novel. It's not A Song of Ice and Fire, or The Wheel of Time, where one series can take up an entire row on your bookshelf. The story starts with the narrator returning to his childhood home to attend a funeral and making his way to the neighborhood he grew up in. There, at the end of the lane he comes across a pond and a family that he seems to have remember, but then as he sits there, all the events of his childhood come flooding back to him. The book then takes us back to when our narrator was just a young boy who learns that things are not exactly what they might appear to be. He meets the girl who lives at the end ...

Darth Plagueis get his Story

Image
The tale of Darth Plagueis as told to us by Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith was probably the most "tell me more" moment of the movie if not the entire prequel trilogy. How old was the story? Was Palpatine the student in the story? We got the distinct impression that some things may have been twisted or left out of the story in order for it to have the maximum effect on Anakin. So what were those things. What is the whole story, without the Sidious edit that we got? Well not we may have a chance to find out. This December (December 27th to be exact) Del Ray Books will release a novel titled Darth Plagueis, where we may get some answers, and at least get a good story out of it.
