Irrelevant But Awesome

This morning, the nominations for the 67th annual Emmy Awards were announced. The full list of nominations is below but first there are a few things worth mentioning in this years crop of nominations. First off, Tatiana Maslany was finally, finally nominated for an Emmy for her work in Orphan Black. It has been, and continues to be, one of the best performances anyone is giving on television today and should be recognized as such. She's been snubbed in the past, but glad to see she's finally getting her due. This will be the last year that past favorites like Mad Men and Parks and Recreation can be nominated for anything, so it's very possible that they will take home a good share of what they've been nominated for as a sort of "thank you" to those shows. You heard correctly, HBO is releasing a special edition of Risk with Hasbro in the likeness of their hit show, Game of Thrones. The game boasts over 650 pieces, two custom game boards, seven sculpted armies, seven player board and 20 character cards. There's 3 game modes for players 18 and up and will go for $74.95 when it hits store shelves in August. The top picture is actually 2 map boards put together that combine for a 7 player battle for full control. Separate the boards and play "War of Five Kings" in Westeros, a 3 to 5 player game that features the houses of Martell, Stark, Baratheon, Lannister and Tyrell. And finally, there's a two player game trying to rule the Ghiscari slavers in Esso featuring houses Targaryen and Ghiscari. Special edition Risk games aren't exactly rare but if there was ever a franchise that would translate well into a board game, Game of Thrones and Risk seem like the perfect marriage. If you're anything like me, you can't stand complete silence, especially when you're reading a book or writing something. I needed certain music that make me feel at ease but not distract me to the point where I lose track of my thoughts. I use to call it "Homework Music." Seriously, I've got an entire section of my iTunes library designated to this. Parodies can vary greatly when it comes to quality. Sometimes you can find a gem like Airplane. More often than not you find Disaster Movie, Meet the Spartans, The Starving Games, etc. But in this day and age where quality parodies seems to be few and far between, do you know where you can actually find a parody or two that are not only hilarious, but actually educational for kids as well? That's right, Sesame Street has stepped up to the plate recently, and cranked out several great parodies of recent pop culture. I've heard of shows that have been canceled, and then uncanceled due to either loud enough fan support or last minute deals going through. I've also heard of shows that got canceled before a single episode was aired. (This happened to the show Hieroglyph , just this past year.) But I'm not sure if both of these things have ever happened to the same show before now. A while back, the land of Oz seemed to be everywhere. Disney had released a fairly successful prequel movie about the Wizard first arriving, Oz characters were showing up on Once Upon a Time , and there were no less than three (count 'em three) Wizard of Oz themed TV shows in development at the same time. One of those shows was Emerald City on NBC. Emerald City was described as a Game of Thrones style interpretation of the land of Oz (i.e. NBC would like some of that GoT success) that would cover events not only from the original Wizard of Oz book, but its thirteen sequels as well. I'm sure we're all very aware of the face that Game of Thrones will start it's fifth season this Sunday and for those who haven't read the books yet, you've almost made it to the point where nobody will be able to spoil any thing for anybody anymore! We're all going to be on the same page! (metaphorically speaking that is.)
