Ten Year Old Movie Finally Gets A Release Date

Melissa McCarthy is a busy person. Last year she was in three movies, as well as making time for an appearance in the Gilmore Girls revival and her constant appearances this past year on Saturday Night Live as Sean Spicer. It’s not quite Rock levels of everywhere, but make no mistake, McCarthy is keeping busy. In the five years since Bridesmaids pushed her into super stardom, McCarthy has become one of the biggest names in comedy, which makes her next project so interesting.

Cook-Off!, a movie set to hit theaters this November, isn’t the latest movie that McCarthy has been working on for the past several months. This is a movie that was actually made ten years ago back in 2007. For whatever reason, the movie was completed but never released. It’s only recently been picked up by Lionsgate who is releasing the movie later this year.

What’s interesting is you have to realize that in 2007, McCarthy is not the star that she is now. At the time she hadn’t appeared in a movie at all since 2003, and was still best known for her role as Sookie St. James on Gilmore Girls. In a way Lionsgate has gotten their hands on a McCarthy project without having to pay for what McCarthy would cost today.

Reports are saying that the movie has been re-edited to work better for a 2017 audience, though it’s not clear exactly what that will mean. Perhaps some dated jokes will have been removed (remember, this movie was being filmed while George W Bush was still in office) though Lionsgate clearly things there is still enough material here to work as a 2017 theatrically released movie.

This isn’t the first time a movie has sat, completed, on the shelf for several years before finally being released. It’s not even the first time this year. Earlier this year Tulip Fever a movie that completed its filming in 2014 was finally released though in that case the delay was likely due to the quality of the movie. Tulip Fever was torn apart by the critics and ultimately bombed in the theater. Will Cook Off! do any better? We’ll find out November 17th.
