A Comic-Con Trailer Collection

Last month we were hit with an overwhelming amount of Hollywood advertising and announcements in the form of Comic-Con 2016.

Originally I was going to try to compile a huge post of all the big stories and trailers that were released over the weekend but that quickly became an insurmountable task. With new announcements happening all the time, there were announcements happening faster than could be reported on. This isn't even a complete list of every trailer that was released at comic-con (Trailers for Netflix Marvel shows Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders were released as well) but it is a list of some of the biggest trailers to debut this year from Comic-Con gathered in one place for your viewing pleasure.

Wonder Woman

Warner Bros. and DC had a pretty big task before them going into Comic-Con this year. After the reaction that Batman v Superman received back in March, they had to prove that they had not only taken the reaction to heart but that Batman v Superman would end up being a small hiccup on an eventual slate of fantastic, must see movies that would make up the DC movie universe. Wonder Woman is the first step on that trail. While we've already scene Wonder Woman in action in Batman v Superman, this movie goes back to the early part of the 20th century to explore Wonder Woman's origins. The trailer has a much more lighthearted feel than previous DC movies, cramming more jokes into it's three minute run time than Batman v Superman had in two and a half hours. There are a lot of slow motion shots of her feet in this movie, though my guess it to make sure we can all she that they didn't put her in high heels in the movie.

Justice League

This movie is almost two years away still, so I was surprised that there was any footage to show off at all, let alone a full blown trailer. A lot of time is dedicated to showing us how bad ass Aquaman is which honestly makes me a little bit nervous. I know that Aquaman's the joke member of the Justice League, but I fear that they may be leaning so far in the other direction that Aquaman's going to go full parody of the other version of himself. Remember when Aquaman lost his hand? Yeah, I'm a little concerned that we're getting an extreme version of that Auquaman.

Doctor Strange

After seeing the same teaser trailer every time I've gone to the movies this summer, I'm mostly just excited to finally get some new footage of Doctor Strange. This trailer doesn't really give away any more of the plot than the teaser did, but it does take the time to make sure you know this is going to be the weird Marvel movie. Visually amazing to be sure, but there is a whole lot of "were are they going to go with this?" as you watch this one.

The LEGO Batman Movie

It really feels like an executive took a look at The LEGO Movie, one of the most creative, funniest, cleverest movies to come out in the past decade and decided that the reason it worked was because it made Batman jokes. And just think how much more money it could make if all the jokes were Batman jokes. That being said, taking a terrible idea and making a great movie is the reason we have The LEGO Movie in the first place, so I'm casting doubt aside and looking forward to this one. It's a funny trailer. A very, very funny trailer actually, and I'd be happy to watch another 97 minutes of LEGO doing Batman things.

Kong: Skull Island

Originally this movie was called Skull Island, and I was extremely excited for it. After all, King Kong was just one of the many terrors that lived on Skull Island. There were monsters, giant bugs, and dinosaurs. Real, still alive after all these years dinosaurs, roaming the island. What a great idea to make a movie more thoroughly exploring this island. Then they added the Kong part to the title, and announced that it was a lead up to a King Kong vs. Godzilla movie since both character were now owned by the same company. I'm still looking forward to it, because my heart loves Kong, but I'm not wild about a movie that's running in place for two hours because the real movie doesn't come along for another three years.

Legends of the Hidden Temple

I can't believe this exits. We may have hit peak nostalgia on this one. But apparently they got the original voice of Olmec to return and they're trying to put a monkey statue together in the trailer so instead of rolling my eyes at this like a reasonable adult, I'm giggling in excitement that this is going to be a thing.

Blair Witch

This may have been the big shocker of the convention. A low budget horror movie titled The Woods was announced some time ago, but there wasn't too much fanfare around it. After all we get a dozen or more of these types of movies every year. But then when the trailer premiered, it turned out that the movie was actually a full blown sequel to the 1999 movie The Blair Witch Project, the movie that kicked off the found footage horror genre a decade and a half ago. And when I say sequel I don't mean "mostly original movie that has a wink or two at Blair Witch fans" or "technically takes place in the same universe as the original movie." No, this looks like a direct sequel that deals with the fallout of the events from the original movie. This is more of a Blair Witch sequel than the Book of Shadows thing we got all those years ago.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

I feel like there needs to be a King Arthur movie every ten years or so, just to keep the legend alive and relevant. But other that a sword stuck in a stone at one point, this movie barely feels like King Arthur at all. It's a Guy Richie movie for sure, but it feels like any other Richie movie only, this one is set in the middle ages. If you took the title card out of the trailer, I'm not sure people would be able to tell that this movie is supposed to be the story of one of the most famous legends of all time.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Watching this trailer, I realized that this was everything I wanted from the Harry Potter series. Not that I don't love Hogwarts, but what are wizards like in other parts of the world? What was this world like in other time periods throughout our history? What is it like being an adult in Harry Potter? That's exactly what this movie is doing. It's a different time period, a different place and different characters from anything we've seen so far from this world, but it's a well developed enough world that instead of confusing, it all feels so exciting. 2016 is the year that Harry Potter came back into our lives. As if he ever left.
