The Great West Wing Rewatch: 3.19 "The Black Vera Wang"

Joel: I know we met Donovan last episode, but we really get to see his interactions a lot more with CJ here, and we’re starting to get a very clear picture of where this is headed. Let me first say that I love Danny and have missed him this whole season. (I believe that season 3 is the only season where Danny doesn’t appear in any episodes.) Also while CJ and Donovan are flirt-bickering in her office, I can clearly see the goldfish from Danny on her desk in several shots and it reminds me of Danny in a scene where Danny would probably be a very awkward topic of conversation. That being said, I really enjoy Donovan as a character. He’s smart, clearly feels very passionate about his job, and is able to match CJ quip for quip. He’s a character that ultimately will be in the show very little, but in that short time we get an image of what is required and expected of a member of the secret service. It’s a role in the White House that we’ve seen very little of up to this point, yet it plays a very important role. And ultimately, CJ is the perfect foil of a character for this storyline, her and Donovan play perfectly off of each other, and I really enjoy their scenes together here.
I still miss Danny though.

Chris: With the threat on CJ a looming thing, Sam's assistant sure seems abundantly naive to straight up open an unmarked envelop like that. Sam continues the naive theme going as he meets up with the opposing campaign manager to discuss the proposed negative ad aimed at the president. Everyone in the Bartlet campaign told him it was a bad idea and one week after Sam is an observational genius, he's completely oblivious to the most obvious trap there is. And Donovan is a nice guy and all but, I agree with Joel, he's not Danny therefore I am against Donovan but it would be nice to see her take a load off, tensions have been high for a while. Also you would think by now the president would realize that if some big attack happens, he's going to follow protocol, he's going into the bunker and any attempt at saying otherwise is simply wasted energy.

Hey! We know these people: Evan Rachel Wood (Across the Universe, The Wrestler) and David Burtka (How I Met Your Mother and Neil Patrick Harris' husband)

A good president gets carried to the bunker kicking and screaming.
