The New Flash Gordon Movie takes a step foward!

It's going to be hard to get audiences in this day and age to take a character like Flash Gordon seriously. Most people, when thinking about the character of Flash are going to picture the character as he is presented in the serials and comics from the 1930s, a very basic, flat character, with really not much in the way of any character devlopment or pathos. Pretty much what a modern day audience member would describe when talking about pulp sci-fi from the 30s.

Some might think about his last outing on the big screen in 1980 in a movie that I'm going to describe as delightfully weird, but others might have understandably less kind words about the film. (Though we can all agree that the theme song was AWESOME!)

So it's understandable why people might have a hard time taking a "serious" interpretation of this property...well...seriously. Most recently in 2009, there was a serious Flash Gordon TV show on the syfy channel, that lasted a grand total of one season.

So if you can't get serious, maybe try for madcap.

Matthew Vaughn has apparently been approached to direct the character's next outing on the big screen. The director is perhaps best known for his over the top super hero movie Kick Ass, and for revamping the X-Men franchise with First Class, so there's a good chance that Vaughn may have something to bring to the property. Again this is still the early negotiation process, but I'd be interested to see Vaughn's take on Flash.
