Apocalypse Nowadays

Image
As we all know, I am Greensboro's self-proclaimed King of the Undead. In addition to having a zombie related tshirt for literally every day of the week, I run an annual zombie walk called the Belligerent Risen Against the Inhuman Nullification of Zombies (or BRAINZ for short). I also collect zombie books, movies, comics, art, figures, etc etc etc. I know my stuff when it comes to the reanimated, cannibalistic corpses of your dearly beloved. And I've got a few gripes about something I have just witnessed. I just watched the trailer for the movie adaptation of Max Brooks' novel World War Z . I read this book not two months ago and loved every page of it! The way Brooks took the Romero idea of the slow, methodical, creeping zombie hoards and applied it to a global catastrophe showed depth and insight and research that just blew my mind! This is what was probably happening around the world when the group of survivors was trapped in the farmhouse during Night of the Living D

Disney Buys Lucasfilm, New Star Wars Movie in 2015

Image
The news has broken to the public and it caught us all by surprise: Walt Disney Co. has bought Lucasfilm at the price of $4.4 billion. While that notion isn't all that surprising seeing the close relationship these two have enjoyed throughout the year, the news that really blindsided a lot of people was the announcement that production will begin for a Star Wars Episode 7 movie now slated for a 2015 release. As for George Lucas' involvement, it's being reported that the Star Wars godfather will serve as "Creative Consultant" on the upcoming film. George Lucas is quoted as saying "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers." So what does that mean for the franchise? Will the mouse stick his dirty little nose in and become the new evil emperor? Here are a few concerns made by fellow IBA-ers: -What does the mean for the EU? Will the canon be tweaked in any way? -Will this bode well for the difficulties the video g

Amazing Unused Indiana Jones Posters

Image
As a fairly big Indiana Jones fan, I adore the classic Raiders of the Lost Ark movie poster that we are all familiar with. It is truly a majestic thing, and ranks up there among what I would consider to be one of the best move posters of all time.  But like all movies, there were other posters, posters that for whatever reason, were not selected and thus never saw the light of day, until now.  This is just one of several posters that ended up not getting used, but nonetheless is an amazing poster. And just in case you can't tell from the art style, that is indeed an drawing from Drew Struzan who is famous for many posters from the era including Star Wars, Back to the Future, Harry Potter, and the Indiana Jones posters that you are familiar with.  Screen Crush has a whole bunch of Indy posters for you to check out on their site.

The Music Review Nobody Asked For: The 2nd Law

Image
Let's begin with a disclaimer: I am a huge Muse fan (both in weight and metaphorically) and so this review is written as an attempt to be as objective as I can. The 2nd Law is Muse's 6th album coming off the hugely successful and Grammy-winning 5th album The Resistance. Supremacy Like classic Muse, the album starts off with a theatrical epic that goes over-the-top of what most people considers over-the-top. The common theme for most of Muse's opening songs is challenging authority and if the lyrics don't convince you Supremacy does the same, Matt Bellamy's guitar duet with a trumpet will do the trick. The track builds up to a fever pitch that makes even the quietest pacifist want to break something. Madness An interesting choice as their first official single for the album, this song came off as the natural progression to what they band was trying to accomplish with "Undisclosed Desires" in the previous album. This track is, for the most part, a g

The Movie Review Nobody Asked For: The Cabin in The Woods

Image
Ah yes, another review that I was never approached to write nor was it ever specified that it was needed. Well you're going to get it anyway. Why? Because I can and you will like it as per our contractual agreement. You may be asking, "What contractual agree are you talking about, Doctor?" And my response is you are all focusing on the wrong point and let's take this discussion back to the reason we are all joined here today. Ladies and gentleman, I present to you The Cabin in The Woods , a comedic horror movie that is sometimes more comedy than horror. This little bit of business is directed by Drew Goddard and was the brainchild of both Goddard and lord of the nerds, Joss Whedon. By all means, I should have written this review two years ago, back when the movie was slated to be release. However, timing was a cruel beast as the film came to be just as MGM studios was crumbling into bankruptcy (which is an absurd to spell but is awesome for Words with Friends) in

2014 will mark Godzilla's Return

Image
So for some time now, pictures, such as the ones below, have shown up from time to time on the ineternet.  Pictures such as those have all been about a movie. A Godzilla movie. An American made Godzilla movie. Now this isn't the first time America has attempted to take on the big moster from Japan, but this is an exciting post, so we'll not worry about the 1998 attempt right now.  The important thing to note is that yes, this Godzilla movie is moving forward, and it was announced today that Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. have scheduled the Godzilla movie to be released on May 16th, 2014.  As of right now, not much is known about the movie, other than the images above, the fact that director   Gareth Edwards has been tapped to bring the monster to the screen, and a surprise trailer and teaser poster that debuted earlier this year at Comic-Con. The trailer hasn't yet made it's way to the internet, but you can check out the poster below

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have a van...And 23 DVDs

Image
As a franchise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is one that has reached a level that few can ever hope to obtain. From movies, to video games, to action figures, to, of course, TV shows, the turtles are everywhere. And for many, the biggest part of that franchise was the Turtles cartoon from the late 80s and early 90s. Which is why it's so mind boggling that these have been the most difficult incarnations to get of the turtles for some time now.  James Rolfe, (The Angry Video Game Nerd of Cinnemassacre) released a video some time back that explains the tragedy of the Ninja Turtles DVD releases better than I ever possibly could. So, rather than try, here is the video in full. It should be noted that since that video, seasons nine and ten have been released, but beyond that, there is something that, theoretically at least, is even better. Scheduled for release on November 13th of this year (just in time for holiday shopping) the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Complete Cla

Mark Hamill returns to the Joker! if only for a minute or two...

Image
Recently, several of the writers hear at Irrelevant But Awesome attended Star Wars Celebration VI in Orlando. For four days, we were totally immersed in Star Wars, past, present and future. And while there will be time to discuss in great, GREAT detail all of the Star Wars related experiences that we have been through, I wanted to first, take this moment and share with you, something that happened on that trip that was only minimally Star Wars related.  For those that don't know Mark Hamill, who was obviously there for Luke Skywalker related reasons, was also the voice of The Joker on the Batman Animated Series from 1992 till 1995 and then later in several other TV shows, movies, and video games. In an interview with Mark Hamill at Celebration, his role of the Joker was brought up and, for a live audience, Mark Hamill recited a monologue that the Joker had given in the TV show, nearly twenty years earlier.  One of our own was thoughtful enough to record the moment, so here, b

The Movie Review Nobody Asked For: The Dark Knight Rises

Image
Missed me? Probably not but it's cool. I haven't posted much of anything on here because I've been too engulfed with the whole wrestling thing and also, I only wanted to post a blog on IBA if I was passionate about something. I haven't felt as passionate about anything as of late. Now, don't get me wrong, I love Avengers and I believe it's a wonderful and amazing work of film but I've never been a Marvel guy...I'm not even a DC guy, I'm just a guy that loves Batman movies. Yes, I know how risky it is to put out on the internet that I don't read comics, I haven't watched much of the animated series (as an adult) and I am prepared for the backlash of the idiotic comic book elitists that believe only the comic books matter and any deviation is foolish (usually these account for about 1-2% of the total comic fans, the remaining 98% of you are amazing and I love being around them). With that out of the way, let us get to the actual films *The

Happy Birthday Mr. Williams

Image
Yesterday was the birthday of a great man. An amazing man. A man who contributed more to your movie going experience than you will probably ever know. This Man. John Williams, who turned 80 this year is responsible for seemingly almost every iconic film score. Anything theme you can hum just from hearing the title of the movie is most likely composed by Williams from Star Wars, to Indiana Jones, to Harry Potter to Jaws. It helps that Williams has had a long time working relationship with Steven Spielberg, having composed music for all but two of his projects. So even some of the less iconic Spielberg movies, Hook, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal, aslo have Original scores by Williams. But it's these "lesser known" works that I want to touch on for a minutes. After all Williams has been nominated for an Oscar 47 times (winning five of them) which is second only to Walt Disney who holds the record at 59. (Ironically, thats the same number of times Williams has been nomina

Muppets for Best Song!

Image
What with all the talk about the Oscar nominations getting announced today, one particular nomination has been overlooked. Namely the fact that even though the ENTIRE soundtrack was overlooked by the Golden Globes the Oscars at least did right by the best bunch of original songs this year and nominated Man or Muppet as on of the contenders for Best Original Song. Sure my pick would have been for Life's a Happy Song, but that's not what's important. What is important is that The Muppets got an Oscar Nomination! YAAAAAAAAAY

Superman Lives: The Superman Movie You Never Got to See

Image
I don't know how many people out there know about Superman Lives. It's not exactly the best kept secret of the industry but it's not as if the average guy on the street would know what you were talking about if you brought it up. After all we are talking about a movie that never ended up being made. So first a quick recap. Superman Lives was actually one of several "5th Superman" movies that got started and stalled in between Superman IV The Quest for Peace in 1987 and Superman Returns in 2006. After Quest came out to less than stellar success it killed off the current plans for the next Superman chapter. Other stalled projects include Superman Reborn which would have told the " Death of Superman " story from the comics. As well as Superman:Flyby and a rumored Superman vs. Batman movie that were both in pre-production in the early 2000s. Each of these movies has a crazy story behind it and makes for a fascinating look at what could have been but r
